"I think Cole should go first", Blake said, as Lorenzo and his fellow Wayminders began to open the Pilgrim Path. Cole took a step toward the giant tunnel that Lorenzo had created, but then he hesitated. As Cole stared down the seemingly endless tunnel that had appeared, he began to notice something. He used his power to search inside the Pilgrim Path, which he didn't think was possible. He sensed something. It almost felt similar to when he found Elegance's core, the nexus of her power. With a jolt, he realized something groundbreaking. The Pilgrim Path had an entity, almost like a source of its power! "Cole?" Mira's voice brought him to reality. "Are u okay? You've been staring blankly at the Path for two or three minutes". Cole turned his head and looked at her. He saw all his friends and the kids from Earth standing behind her, and everyone who had helped defeat Ramarro staring at him expectantly. "The Pilgrim Path is alive... I-I can feel the nexus of its power", he said, hardly believing what he was saying. " So... what does that mean?" Mira asked. "Can u connect to it?" Cole noticed Lorenzo stepping forward, disbelief written on his face." Cole is right. I can't believe I didn't see it before. Cole, if you could connect to it and manage to control it, you could alter its very purpose and the way it functions! You must try to connect to its nexus." Cole turned back to face the Path. He wanted to go home, but he also didn't want to leave his newfound friends and everything they had done in the Outskirts. He knew the kids he had rescued wanted to go home, including Jenna and his best friend Dalton. He glanced at Dalton, who stood next to Jenna. Dalton gave him a slight nod. Cole turned back toward the Path and began to search for its core once again. The power within the Path was immense, almost overpowering. Cole struggled to find his way to the center, pushing his way through its overwhelming amount of energy. With one final push he found the core. It was like nothing he had ever sensed. The nexus was pulsating with raw energy and shaping power, and it seemed as if it was glowing as bright as the sun, releasing fluorescent colours that swirled all around the mass of power. As he attempted to connect to the core, Cole felt shocks of energy flow through his body, and his arms began to tremble. "Your almost there Cole, hold on!" he heard Lorenzo shout. Cole pushed and pushed, and then in an instant, everything stopped. He realized he could feel inside the Path without any resistance. He could sense its nature, the raw power that it could exert. "You- you did it Cole!" Lorenzo sounded shocked. Cole turned and saw everyone staring at him in awe. "Cole, you realize this means you are amongst the strongest shapers the Outskirts has ever seen, more powerful than the original High Shapers even! More powerful than me! The only person that could match your power would be Kendo Rattan!" Lorenzo exclaimed. "I'm not done yet", Cole said turning back to face the Path. With ease, he connected to the nexus and began to alter the Path. He made it possible to return, so it was now a two way trip. The path changed visibly. The tunnel became wider and longer, and it now had two sides rather than one gaping hole that ended in oblivion. "Now we can come back whenever we want", Cole declared. "And as long as the Path remains intact, we won't gradually forget about the Outskirts. Let's go through". All the kids from his home town began to step through. Cole walked through with Dalton and Hunter at his side, and he was instantly standing on his street, facing his house. He looked next to his front door and noticed a gaping hole in the air. It was the Path. He could now go back and visit the Outskirts and all his friends there whenever he felt like it. But first, he had something to do.
As all the kids he brought back with him began to walk their own ways, presumably back to their houses, Joe walked up to him with Brady. "Thank u so much. I will never forget what u have done for me. I'm going to find Brady's home and then try and restart my life", he said with a tear in his eye. Cole smiled. " Thank you for helping me along the way. It wouldn't have been possible without you". Cole waved as they walked away. Dalton said goodbye and went towards his house just down the street. Cole and Hunter began to walk up towards the door of their house. "Cole? Hunter? Is that you? Supper was ready an hour ago! Where were u two?" Cole and Hunter looked at each other and smiled. "We were just off on a little adventure, Mom" Cole said.
Epilogue
5 years later
Cole and Jenna sat on a bench, looking out over a river. They had been dating for 3 years now. Cole had never been happier. Dalton was still his best friend. Hunter had gone off to college, and he had begun dating Violet, occasionally going to the Outskirts via the Path to see her. Cole had received messages from Joe, who had successfully found Brady's parents. Joe had found his girlfriend, they rebuilt their life together and got married last summer. Cole still went to school with all the kids who had gone to the Outskirts with him, and they all remembered their time there. Cole saw a ripple in the air in front of him and a flash of colours. He smiled. He knew what it meant. It was how Mira communicated to him, and it usually meant she wanted to see him. He looked at Jenna. "I'm going to go to the Outskirts, Mira wants to see me. I'll be back any minute". She smiled and kissed him on the cheek. "Tell everyone I say hi", she said. Cole walked back to his house and immediately went towards the Path. He had visited his friends in the Outskirts plenty of times. Twitch was the leader of the Grinaldi. Jace had abolished slavery with the help of the High Queen Harmony and he had found a long lost brother who he traveled the Outskirts with. Mira lived a comfortable life with all her sisters in Junction. It seemed so long ago he had met Mira, Jace, and Twitch at the Sky Raiders. They had escaped together, fought countless battles together, and eventually saved the Outskirts from Ramarro and the shapecrafters together. They all lived separate lives now, but every once and a while they met up again. He stepped into the Path and found his three friends waiting for him, sitting in Queen Harmony's palace. "Hey Cole", Jace said casually. Life was good.
