- okay, so before i start i just want to say that this is kind of cheating. i didn't finish the book, you'll see why later, in the review. aside from that, enjoy the chapter. -
the catcher in the rye by j.d. salinger was such a boring book. it's supposed to be a classic and i understand that and why. however, reading it now, it's incredibly boring. throughout the whole book, or what i managed to read, the main character, Holden Caulfield, talks about nothing. absolutely nothing, the whole time.
he talks about things that don't matter. and i assume he was supposed to be written like that because the catcher in the rye was published in the 1940's, where people where told they shouldn't speak their minds. and holden caulfield speaks his mind, a hell of a lot.
so this was j.d. salinger's way of making a mark in the 1940's, and it did its job, then. it did its job then, when it was supposed to but when i read this in the mindset of now. it seems all but necessary.
and i can appreciate that j.d. was doing things for his time, and his generation. but people are still reading and talking about this book like it was published recently for this generation.
see here, i know that this ' classic ' is supposed to be timeless, to tell you to say whatever you want and not to let anyone stop you. but that isn't really what i've gotten out of this book. i was really excited for this read, but it was too boring to continue.
there isn't really much else i can say. the catcher in the rye will always be timeless in the view of some people, but it just isn't for me. i can't read a book that talks about nothing, when the main character talks about nothing as well.
can't say i enjoyed this one too much. 2/5 again. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
that's all for now. thanks for reading,,
janelle.
