Chapter 3

Connor’s POV

My beta, Jeff, and my third in command, Brice, and I are walking to the clearing which was our normal hang out when I smelled the most intoxicating smell.  It smelt like vanilla and raspberries and I wanted, no, needed to find the source.  My wolf paced in anticipation.  “Mate! Go to mate!”  He howled in excitement.  I continued forward toward the smell as Jeff and Brice followed me.  I searched the field but couldn’t find anyone there, so I continued following the sent.  As I approached the other side of field I heard paper rustling and something scurrying around like they were desperate to get out.  I was just about to look behind the tree where the noise was coming from when something hit my chest and pulled me down.

I looked down at the tiny girl beneath me.  She looked so beautiful, so fragile, like I could squish her from just being on top of her.  I quickly took my weight off the tiny human girl who looked to be a year or two younger than me.  That’s when I realized it was her I was smelling.  “Mate.”  I whispered, more toward myself.  She gave me a weird look which quickly turned to terror as she realized she was beneath a strange boy in the middle of the woods.  The fact that she thought I would ever hurt her, let alone anyone else, made my wolf and me sad.  She quickly got up from underneath me and started to run away.  My wolf whimpered at her trying to escape from me so I quickly grabbed her wrist and felt sparks shoot up my arm.

I looked her over.  She was quite small for a human but also quite beautiful.  She looked so innocent and nervous in our presence.

“Is this human really your mate?”  Brice mind linked me, saying human in disgust.  “Yes, and you will respect your future Luna.”  I said back in my Alpha voice. “Yes Alpha.”  He responded.

I dropped her tiny fragile wrist and lifted my hand so I could possibly touch her again.  I looked back at her beautiful blue doe eyes and spotted some brown specks in her eyes.  “Hey, sorry about that.  I’m Connor Nichols.  What’s your name?”  I asked giving her my award winning smile.  My beautiful mate looked at my hand unsure, then back up at me.  She made a few complex movements with her hands before running off.

I stood there confused until Jeff came up to me.  “What was that?”  I questioned him.  “That was Sign language, Connor, she’s mute.”  He told me gently.  I just stood there shocked.  My beautiful mate couldn’t talk.  I would never be able to hear her angelic voice speaking to me or singing to our pups.  She would never be able to say my name, or tell me she loves me.  But it didn’t matter.  She was still my beautiful mate, I would learn Sign language for her so she would always be spoken for.

I glanced down to find an open sketch book on the forest floor.  I slowly picked it up and looked at the drawings.  My mate scent was on the book so I knew it belonged to her.  As I looked through it, I found many beautiful drawings that left me breathless.  Most of them were scenic views like the one she had just drawn of the field.

But every once and awhile, there was a wolf or other animal delicately sketched onto the paper.  Some were howling at the moon, others were pups playing, and my favorite, a black wolf that was nearly identical to mine.  Seeing the sketch of the wolves made my wolf howl with joy because she obviously loved them.  I flipped to the cover and on the front it read “Ashley Larson” in a faded black.  I smiled widely now knowing my mates name, which was as beautiful as her, and that I would definitely see her again.

It had gotten late, and I started to worry if my beautiful Ashley had gotten home safely.  “I’m going to go check on Ashley, I’ll be back soon.”  I said over my shoulder to Jeff and Brice who were now flipping through Ashley’s sketch book in awe.  I walked behind the nearest tree and stripped off my clothes, so I had something to change into once I got back to the field, and shifted into my midnight black wolf.  I shook out my fur in the light breeze and start to sniff out Ashley’s scent, which was starting to disappear due to the amount of time since we met.

I took me about half an hour to find her house, and by then I had the mask of night on my side.  I walked up to the huge cabin which faintly had her scent on it so I knew it belonged to her family.  I looked up to find a figure approaching the bay window I stood underneath.  I watched as the figure drew back the shades to reveal my Ashley.  I was relieved to know she was home safe, but I was upset that she was staying so far away from me.  Not to mention the safest place for her was with me.

School didn’t start for another week, so I wouldn’t have an excuse for seeing her daily until then.  I would just have to visit my lovely mate or find her wandering through the woods again.
