I’m sitting patiently in the guidance counselor's office. Mrs. Burkingham has replaced Joseph Milgram, giving a new light to this school.
“So,” she says, smiling. Her red hair is braided and sits on her side, reaching her shoulders and her tan skin is beautiful, showing her beautiful, latina self. “You don’t have to make a decision now, but what are you leaning towards?”
I answer immediately.
“Criminal justice.”
She smiles again and writes something down on her notepad.
“Interesting choice,” she says. “I expect great things from you.”
She dismisses me and I walk out, greeted by Wes’s hug and a kiss on my forehead. So far, this day has been the best yet.
I woke up, drove Mia and Keller to school, found Wes, who finishes four months sober today, with a cup of coffee just for me, and I’ve decided on my major already.
Everything is looking up.
Everything is amazing.
“Oh my God,” Mia cries as I step out of the waiting room. Mia, Keller, Riley, and Jessie stand there, waiting for Wes and I. They’re all huddled around Mia’s phone.
“What?” I ask, suddenly worried.
Oh no, what is it?
Carter and Flynn appear behind Mia with shock filling their faces.
A sinking feeling rests in the pit of my stomach. What is it?
“Did you hear?” Skye asks.
Keller looks up and finally says it.
“Skye was in the hospital this morning.”
And Mia finishes it.
"Someone shot her.”
But Carter's quivering lips finish the whole story that leaves me shaking.
"But she didn't make it."
