My thumb stills over her name in my contacts.
Should I?
She deserves to know, it's my mother man. This shouldn't be a hard decision to make. The prickly bundle in my throat starts to hurt even more and I watch the screen of my phone go dark as I push the power button.
I can't do this.
Just forget it Lindsey, you wanted to start a new life, here's the chance. Forget the past.
I comfort myself and bend down to tie the laces of my red vans.
Something inside me just isn't satisfied, and I know what it is but I wave it aside. I really shouldn't care. It's my first day in college and I am off to a new start, this is going to be great only if I want it to be and I will make this great for me.
I stand up and take one last look in the mirror. My red shirt and striped jeans go well with the red vans. I've left my brown-golden hair open to fall in their natural curls down to my chest and the mascara brings out my green eyes.
I look presentable, like I belong to a respectable family.
Family...huh
My phone rings and hope races through my heart. She remembered maybe.
But hope is dangerous man. It can cut you in ways a hunter's knife can't.
Courtney's name flashes on the screen and my heart just sinks a bit lower. Sighing I answer.
"Hey Court," I greet her.
"Heyyy girl, you on your way?" She asks in a high pitched voice.
Well, that's how Courtney's voice usually is. She's literally always this excited.
"Just heading out.. You?"
"I'm on my way and I will wait for you in the parking lot and you need to get here fast because I will not be patient enough," she orders me.
I chuckle as I balance the phone between my shoulder and ear and wear my bag. It's really so light and why wouldn't it be? It just has my laptop and two notebooks in it. Man this feels weird after all the heavy bag packs in school.
" Just think about all the boys you'd get to lay your eyes on Court," I say.
"You do have a point Lin but think about all the guys inside the frikkin building so you need to hurry up before my makeup melts in the sun."
I grab the bunch of keys containing my car and apartment key from the wall and move out.
"Oh my God Courtney stop freaking out I'll be there in 10 minutes," I lower my voice to not disturb the neighbors, well neighbor actually.
She's literally always drunk and sleeps late. I've only had small talk with her, she doesn't exactly 'emit' the neighbor feeling.
"You better," Courtney replies and hangs up the phone.
I smile and descend the stairs reaching the small building's parking lot. Aaron's car is not in its original spot. He must've left early.
Gosh, I am always late.
I hurry to my car and get out of the creepy parking lot. It always gives me the chills. Partly because of the orangish lights and mostly because Aaron pranked me once in here.
That was horrible Oh my God.
****
"So princess decides to show up," Courtney's voice reaches my ears as I get out of the car and she engulfs me in a hug.
