The next day, I woke up nervous again. Today was for the free skate program and I was afraid I wouldn't keep up first place. Who wouldnt worry when going up against Victor Nikiforov? But I had beaten him the day before....
As Mie and I walked into the stadium, I found a nice place to put my duffel bag as I began to warm up. I plugged in my head phones and listened to music as I waited for the competition to start in ten minutes. When it did, I waited patiently for my performance, and when it came, I stepped onto the ice and hugged Mie over the edge of the rink.
"Like I've said before, don't attempt the quadruple axel." She whispered to me. I nodded like I always do and slid off to the center of the rink, where I got ready to start. The music began and I skated my heart away, giving it my all.
Make them believe that you're a bad boy. A gangster. Make them believe you are a rebel! I thought to myself as I skated.
When I finally finished, I bowed and skated off the stage, picking up a bouquets of flowers as I went. I waited patiently on the bench with Mie while they judges counted up my score.
"Yuri Kastuki has achieved a 207.47 free skate score, giving him a total of 325.81! A new personal best and a new record!"
The crowd burst in a loud applause, clapping and whistling and cheering as well. As they did that, Victor slid onto the ice, getting ready for his program. When the music started, he started, and it was amazing. No one could keep their eyes off of him. Everyone had gone silent and was watching with awe.
He has a sort of elegance to him that I could never hope to gain. He draws himself attention so easily. But I will not give up. I broke the record today. I will win. I know it.
When Victor finished, he slid off of the ice and went over to his bench to sit down. The judges counted his score.
"Victor Nikiforov has won 219.68 points for his free skate program, putting him in first place with 329.15 total points!"
My face dimmed with disappointment.
Victor won. I'm happy for him. But hey, at least I got second and can go to the finals. Gold medal here I come!
Mie patted me on the back as we got up to go congratulate Victor. We stepped over to his bench cautiously. Mie pushed me forward and I went and sat next to him. He seemed surprised at my "bold" move to come and sit with him on his bench, but he didnt mind. He wrapped his arm around me and pulled me close.
"You did amazing out there, Victor! It's no wonder you won."
"Now, dont think like that, little piggy! I know you can win if you try hard enough! I believe in you!" Victor smiled. "Dont forget, if you win the gold, you win my hand in marriage!"
"I still dont understand why you said that last year before the finals. Was it to motivate me to win or something? Because if so, that was some pretty bad motivation." I laughed.
"Haha! It was just for motivation at first, but I really would marry you!"
Victor grabbed my hand and kissed it. We both chuckled when fan girls squeeled at the affection.
"We should start heading towards the ice now. We need to get our medals." I said, standing up.
Victor followed my lead and we headed over to the ice with our coaches. We stepped onto the ice and slid over to the center, where a judge stood with three medals in his hands. When we got to the center, Yurio was already there, steaming with fury that I managed to beat him. The judge smiled as he placed the golden medal around Victor's neck, and I watched him kiss it. Then the judge gave me my silver medal, and then Yurio his bronze.
