Being the new girl in town is never easy but if you already know who you are then it makes it easier. There are two types of people in this world, those who follow a hard truth and those who lead an easy lie. I haven't decided which one I wanted to be. Neither has anyone else. I think we all try our best to be the happy medium but it will never work because an in between doesn't exist. As much as I want to believe I'm both, I'm really just waiting to decided which one I want more.

My mother decided to follow a man disguised lie and live with her fiancé, Michael Hatch. To be honest, he's too good to be true. I hear mom talk about how generous and sweet he is and how he could be the perfect father. Yeah, right.

Unfortunately, I didn't have any choice but to travel across the country to a small town in Phoenix. I wasn't so sure about this small town because for one, about twenty people go missing each year. I don't know about my mom but I don't want to be one of those people.

Second, there's terrible service which means I won't be able to text or call anywhere I want.

Third, there's an old Native legend that hides deep in the Redwood forest. The legend is believed by everyone who lives in Mattawa, thats the name of the small town my mother is dragging me into. The legend is said that the forest inhabits a five great beast in which protect the forest and it's citizens.

I've begged my mom and tried to tell her about how a horrible place Mattawa is but she wouldn't hear of it. Personally I don't believe all of Mattawa's rumours but I was hoping my mom would.

As we entered the town, it was pouring rain. Every heavy rain drop pelted the car like bullets, making silence hard to appear. The town was filled with nothing but old houses, shops, trees, and even people. "Isn't this fun?" My mom chimed through the noise surrounding the car.

"If you mean living in an ancient town with the chance of likely having my funeral here 'fun', then yes, let's call it that" I frowned, wishing I was back in New York City.

I watched the houses and shops as they roll pass the window. The houses were mostly burned down or chipped which made me feel like I've down graded from being rich to almost poor. "C'mon, Rose. I don't understand why you can't give change a chance. It's quite fun when you look at the glass half full" she smiled. I could tell by the way her smile was artificial that she hated this place as much as I did. The only reason she was happy about moving to such a forlorn town was because she was engaged to a hunk lawyer. At least she knew someone who lived here.

As for me, going to a new town, especially when school is just around the corner, is terrifying for me. "That's easy for you to say, your getting married. At least you don't have to go to a new school" I mumbled, turning my gaze to see my mother gulp with worry.

"Yeah, I guess your right" She said rather sadly. I was about to ask her what was wrong when we pulled into a drive way of a red two storey house complete with dangling flower pots and a furnished deck. With the way he showed off his house, I was surprised no one robbed this place yet.

Michael was sitting on his porch swing, sipping on a soda can, when his face light up. My mom put on the most fake smile I've ever seen as she jumped out of the car and ran towards him. He opened his arms as she flew into them. I sat there for a good minute, watching them laugh and kiss. I don't know why but they reminded me of those college sweethearts you always see snogging each other when ever they can. I'd say Michael's brown hair and gorgeous green eyes perfectly resembled the football captain. As for my mom, her blonde hair and blue eyes were like she was made for cheerleading.

As I got out of the silver Honda civic, I joined my mom and Michael inside. "I was wondering when I finally got to meet the beautiful Rose" Michael smiled as he held out a stern hand. I hesitated to shake it but my mother's cold glare forced me to. I put on a stage smile as I walked into his living room. The walls were white, decorated with beautiful paintings of landscapes and black leather couches. I took a seat on the one seater while my mom and Michael took the love seat.

"Nice place" I said, looking at the precise detail of the room. That was something I did when I was extremely uncomfortable.

"Thank you, I was hoping you liked it, well since your staying here and all" he mentioned. I nodded and smiled.

"Honey, why don't you go take the car and drive around. You might as well start getting familiar with the area?" My mom suggested.

,

"What about my stuff?" I asked. We had packed all our clothes and belongings in the trunk of the car, I wanted to just spend time alone than drive around and get lost.

"I'll take them up for you" Michael offered. I was a little uneasy about letting Michael touch my stuff but after a little thinking, I nodded.

"Oh thats so sweet of you, Michael" Mom cooed as she kissed his cheek. "Alright, go have fun and be back by dinner, Michael wants to take us out to a fancy restaurant" They turned to face each other and pressed lips. Instead of watching another make out session, I grabbed the car keys and ran outside to the car.

It was nearly raining but the clouds still caressed over the town. As I drove through town, I was starting to like this town less and less. I haven't seen anyone my age and if I did they were either drug addicts or busy robbing stores. I sighed with disappointment. I wonder if my mom left enough gas in the tank to take me to New York City. With only a half empty tank and forty dollars in my pocket it seemed unlikely.

As I drove further, the road was surrounded with less houses and more trees until there were no more houses. I began to realize that I had driven next to Redwood Forest. I was starting to feel anxious. Even though I didn't believe in legends, this place some how still gave me the creeps.

As I looked outside my window, I suddenly lost control of the wheels. My car began to swerve left and right, jerking me around like a ragged doll. I effortlessly slammed on the brakes before a white figure jumped in front of the car, smashing into the wind shield. The car caught a grip of the road and jerked me forward, slamming my head into the steering wheel.

My knuckles turned white as I continued to grip the steering wheel. My hard breathing filled the silence. The white figure laid lifeless on the hood of the car. I was shaking, had a bloody nose, and almost peed myself.

As soon as I gathered enough courage, I slowly opened the car door. I walked around the hood and could clearly see what the figure was. It was a wolf.

I turned my head both ways but there were no cars for miles. What do I do? Worse, what do I tell my mom? She'll never trust me with the car again.

Cautiously, I watched to see if the wolf's chest was moving. Unfortunately the wolf hadn't moved for a minute. I sighed and reached for the wolf when it jerked its head up. It leaped off the hood of the car and across the road. It stopped in it's tracks and looked back at me with brilliant blue eyes.

For a moment, it was almost as if It knew who I was. Almost human. The wolf turned it's head and bolted into the deep forest, blood covering patches on it's thick white fur.

What a sight.
