Dakota Swan is someone who cares deeply about family. Her family, is her father, Charlie Swan, Billy Black, Jacob Black, Embry Call, and Quil Ateara. Those people are her family. She doesn't count her mother and older sister because, to her, they don't deserve to be apart of her life. They chose to leave, so why should she put in the effort that they lack.
Unfortunately for the youngest Swan, her sister would be returning home tomorrow. Her father was ecstatic about the return of his daughter, Dakota, was pissed. She never got along with Bella and the fact that Bella chose to stop visiting didn't help either. So for the past week since she found out, all Dakota complained about was Bella's return. Of course, that was only around the boys. Her dad wouldn't let her say anything bad about his precious Bella. Charlie even made her promise to be nice and try to get along with her.
Today is the last day before Bella returns, and Dakota was doing her best to make the most out of it. She had made breakfast for her father and herself before heading over to Jacob's house to help him with the Rabbit. Dakota genuinely enjoyed working on cars with Jake. It was something they did together, a way to spend time with her best friend, and she liked fixing cars. It was their thing.
"So whenever Bella pisses me off I'm still free to come over and stay with you right?" It was a question Dakota had asked before but she wanted to be sure.
Jacob rolled his eyes but the corners of his lips still turned up in a smile, "Yes, Kota. For the millionth time, you're free to stowaway here whenever you want."
Dakota grinned and stood up from her spot on the floor. She dusted off her pants and grabbed a tire to roll over to the car. She leaned it against the passenger door before standing above Jacob, who was currently rolled under the car. Dakota pulled him out and straddled him. This wasn't an unusual occurrence between the two. They'd spend their whole lives together so they were really close and comfortable with each other. Jacobs's mom was like Dakota's mom until the accident. It hurt both of them when she died. But that only made them even closer. If Dakota wasn't at her house, she was at Jacob's. The two were basically joined at the hip. They even tried to convince Charlie to let Dakota transfer to the school on the reservation. Not too successful with that but they're still trying.
"Lunch break? Billy said lunch was ready 15 minutes ago." Dakota pushed a strand of hair behind her ear as she asked the question.
Jake grinned up at his best friend and nodded, "I mean I guess we could take a break."
Dakota shook her head and got off the boy, pulling him up while she did so. They joked and shoved each other on the short walk to the little red cabin that is their home. Both of them covered in grease and dust, Jacob had his sleek black hair in a low ponytail while Dakota had her curly, fiery red hair up in a bun. Her hair was one of her favorite features about herself. She got her hair from her grandmother on her mom's side. Along with her mom's freckles and crystal blue eyes. Jacob found it funny how even though she hated her mom, she looked a lot like her. The only feature she had gotten from her dad was her tan skin. Dakota isn't nearly as tan as Jake and she is several inches shorter than him at 5'4 while he is 5'10.
The pair burst into the house laughing as they made their way to the kitchen where Billy sat. He was reading the newspaper since he had already finished his food and was timing the kids to see how long they would take. 15 minutes is a new record for how fast they got back in the house.
Dakota quickly made herself a plate of chicken, rice and beans before placing a kiss on Billy's cheek and sitting across from him.
"Thank you for making lunch, Billy. Tastes wonderful," Dakota complemented between bites.
Jake tried to thank him as well but his mouth was too full. The only thing they heard from him was a muffled "Thanks dad!" And even that was hard to decipher. Billy just smiled at the two teens in front of him, knowing that though they may deny it now... they're meant to be together eventually. It's just a matter of time.
It took Jacob and Dakota an entire hour to finish eating and drinking the freshly made lemonade, which was Dakota's personal favorite. When they did, they immediately went back out to the shed. There, Dakota and Jacob went to put on the first tire for the Rabbit. It was going to take a lot of work and time, but the two were determined to get it done. And when Dakota and Jake wanted something done, it was going to get done.
Several hours later when it started to get dark the two decided to call it quits for the day. Jacob and Dakota were drenched in sweat when they walked back inside. They had already eaten dinner so they didn't have to worry about that. Instead, Dakota walked into his room, got a fresh pair of panties, a bra, one of Jacob's shirts, and headed to the shower. She always had some clothes over here for when she needed to change, specifically panties and bras, but she had some normal clothes too. Most of time, however, she just stole Jake's clothes.
Once the water was hot enough, she began to wash her hair and body using Jacob's stuff since she liked the way he smelled. Her shower didn't take long because Jacob still needed to shower as well and she was really tired. They spend the whole day working on that car and it was a lot of physical work that exhausted the two. So her shower didn't last more than 10 minutes. After Dakota dried off and changed into the clothes, she made her way to the kitchen to pour herself a glass of water before heading back to Jacob's room. Jacob himself had already hopped in the shower when she sat down on the bed.
Jake didn't have a big room or bed. Both of them barely fit on it but neither seemed to mind because it meant they got to cuddle. Dakota chugged the the water and then continued to stare at her bare legs hanging off the side of the bed. She had recently shaved so her legs were nice and smooth. There were only a couple of scars that had accumulated on her body of the years from doing stupid stuff. There was a long one that ran down her forearm from when she cut it falling out of a tree. The gash was huge and she was rushed to the hospital to get stitches, Dakota hated everything about that trip. But Jacob helped take care of her afterwards and bought her ice cream so it wasn't too bad. Dakota liked her life, she had everything she wanted and more. But with her sister returning she was worried Bella was going to ruin everything.
Dakota was lost in thought so she didn't realize Jacob had entered the room, showered and changed into pajama pants without the shirt, "I know you have nice legs but you've been staring for a real long time now."
Jacob laughed at her startled expression before taking a seat next to her. He didn't say anything at first, Dakota just laid her head against his shoulder and sighed.
"Everything is going to change tomorrow because of her," Dakota's voice was small, she really didn't want her sister to come home.
Jake wrapped his arm around his distraught best friend, "We aren't going to change. You'll always have me, Kota. I ain't going anywhere. I promise."
His words were simple but they meant the absolute world to Dakota, especially when he stuck his pinky out for her to wrap her own around. Jacob was making her a pinky promise, and that was something they never broke. So after that, Jacob kissed her forehead and got under the covers. Dakota followed after him quickly and was pulled into his side. Jacob wrapped his arms around the smaller girl and kept her close to him. Dakota intertwined their legs and pressed her face against his chest, breathing in his familiar and comforting scent.
Jacob knew how upset Bella's return made Dakota, so he swore to himself he would do everything to keep her happy. Dakota knew that as long as she was with Jake she was going to be ok. So with those thoughts being their final ones for the night, Dakota and Jacob fell into a peaceful sleep.*******************************************
