Chapter 2
The next few months went really well. Dad didn't come back once, which put me on edge quite a bit. Jack and James didn't get fired [thankfully]. Bec and Tom were still together. Then that all changed. It was a Friday night; I had just come back from the supermarket. Tom, Bec and Vanessa were at the movies [Tom and Bec weren't allowed to go to the movies alone] and the twins and Clare were at home. As soon I walked in the door I knew something was up. The twin’s usual tanned faces were as white as ghost. Clare was crying. The twins had their softball bats in their hands. I run up into my room and got out my Beretta 92. I looked at it for a second then ran back down stairs to the boys. I slid alongside them and whisper
“What's up”
“Listen.” James replied
Jack flicked message receiver on the phone
“I’m coming.” A deep, hoarse voice said. “I’m coming to get you Sam. I will get you. You and your family too.”
“There's another one too.”
Jack flicked the receiver again. The deep, hoarse came on again.
“I'll start with Clare.”
I heard a whimper behind me.
“Then Vanessa.”
“How?” I whispered weakly to no one but myself.
“Then Tom.”
“No.”
“Then Rebecca.”
“No.” I said a little more strongly as if the person saying it could actually hear me.
“Then Jack.”
“STOP IT! STOP IT JACK. STOP IT!” I yelled out to him
“I'm sorry but you have to listen to it.”
The voice went through all the names then the last massage said
“You ruined me Sam. So now I’m back to return the favour. You have six days to spend with your family. I will find you.”
That was it. I fell to the ground. My legs were unable to support me anymore. I looked at the boys. For what seemed like the first time in their life they looked scared and unsure. I got up again. Picked up Clare and looked both the boys straight in the eye.
“When was this message received?”
“Um, last week Tuesday.” James replied
“What’s todays date?”
He checked his watch
“Six days after.”
“What time was it sent?”
He checked the phone
“5:50pm”
I checked my watch. 5:40pm
“Boys you have ten minutes to get everything you think we will need.”
“Need for what?”
“So we can get as far away from here as possible. I mean everything. Food, first aid kit, water, tents, discuses, clothes and something to defend ourselves with, then meet me out the front in ten minutes.”
With that they started running up the stairs to pack. I ran straight into the garage and into our seven seater van. The cinema was 10 minutes away. 5 if I speed. I put my foot to the floor and screamed out the drive way. I raced across town and made it in record time. I asked the attendant which cinema they were in. Clare was hysterical. Cinema 5.
