If this were a typical kind of superhero story, I would like to say I called the police and received a pat on the back for defending a helpless man who was getting beaten to death by a group of thugs but...in the real world...nothing is ever really that simple.

I quickly called emergency services after beating the three men down, hoping that both they and the other victimized individual would receive immediate medical attention before their wounds worsened. I stayed with the man who had been brutally beaten down and tried to help him stay calm during the whole duration of the wait, hoping the paramedics could make their way onto the scene as soon as possible to soothe his seemingly unbearable pain.

Although I didn't know the guy very well...seeing him such a helpless state had sickened me to my core.

It made me angry to know that their were people out there who were more then willing to beat down someone beyond repair even when they know there isn't a chance their victim would be able to fight back.

It didn't take too long for both police and paramedics to arrive onto the scene.

I don't really remember clearly all that happened due to being a little distraught at the time but, I do remember being sat down by police after explaining to them the situation and what had occurred. The Paramedics swiftly treated and recovered the wounded individuals and were shocked to know I received no injuries in the altercation.

My mind was pretty much elsewhere now that it was over though.

The only thing that really remained in my mind was the thought of when I was going to be let off so I could go home but based upon the looks of the officers I could tell that I was probably gonna be here for awhile. It was pretty understandable really. While I technically did do the right thing by defending a helpless man, I did so on my own accord without once even thinking about calling the police till after the event. As I got time to reflect I began to realize that no matter what my reasons were I did act without thinking and would probably be adequately punished for doing so.

My suspicions were confirmed when one of the officers approached me and sat down on the bench beside me without saying a word. The officer was overweight man appearing to be in his late thirties to earlier forties and he appeared to be just as tired as I was within that moment in time. He remained professional despite this, and now turned his undivided attention onto me as he rested his eyes upon me with a bullet like gaze.

"Well the good news is we got the chance to look back at the park camera footage and saw what happened." The officer stated calmly "However, the bad news is that the circumstances on whether or not you will put under arrest for aggravated assault still remains up for debate. Looking back at the footage we were able to determine that neither of the assailants had physically attacked you meaning legally in the court of law if they wanted to press charges they could rightfully do so." He added.

"So there's a chance I could go to jail for this?" I questioned, feeling my heart sink a bit as a strong feeling of discomfort began to build up within me.

"Yeah...In fact there's a possibility that my partners and I may have to put you in cuffs depending on what decision our commanding officer makes in the end." He remarked with a sigh as he then leaned back in the park bench chair and briefly closed his eyes "That's just the way things are."

"...So what was I supposed to do? sit back and watch that man die?" I asked in slight annoyance.

"No, you were supposed to call the cops first and foremost." He replied briefly. "Then you could've took matters into your hands but the footage showed that you called the cops afterwards after a significant verbal exchange which could imply that you attacked them for other reasons." He remarked, adding onto his previous statement while maintaining a strong formality at the same time.
