Evangeline Moretti walked into the cool room, shrugging on her long and stark white lab coat. Walking over to the fridge, she nodded at her co-worker that was on his way out the door. After placing her lunch in the small and cramped fridge, she slammed it shut and turned around with her hands on her hips."Good morning, Henry!" Evangeline said out loud after making sure she was alone. She walked over and removed the white sheet from 68-year-old Henry Schuyler's dead body.
This was a normal thing for Evangeline, talking to the bodies as though they could respond. She made sure to not do it around her coworkers though as they would chide her for it and deem her the workplace nut job.
She turned around and grabbed her tools, ready to style Henry's hair the way his wife requested. As she turned back around she whistled a soft tune whilst snapping on some gloves.
She frowned as she stared at Henry's sunken face. He apparently died of natural causes.
"Let's get you looking spankin' brand new, Henry," Evangeline said to Henry, grabbing her handy scissors off the small metal tray.
"Oh, I think I forgot something," Evangeline sighed and turned around, looking at her tray of tools. "Don't worry, Henry, we'll get to cutting your hair in no time." She mumbled as she searched for the item she was looking for. Alas she found the comb she was in need of, snatching it off the tray.
"You're not touching this hair, toots," Evangeline heard a gruff voice say from behind her.
Confused, and thinking it was one of her coworkers, she turned around only to see Henry sitting up.
A shriek fell from Evangeline's lips and she backed up, knocking over the tray with all her tools. The loud clatter of the tray and tools bouncing off the floor startled her even further. She backed up until her back hit the counter, her heart racing. Her tan face paled and she felt her heart beating hard against her ribcage.
Evangeline's wide brown eyes stayed on Henry who was smirking at her, the wrinkles in his pale face deepening.
Her head snapped to the side when she heard someone rush through the door. Her coworker, Liam, had a look of panic etched on his slightly tanned skin.
"What's wrong?" Liam rushed out and he briskly walked towards Evangeline, his green eyes wide with worry. Evangeline was shaking, her heart racing. Liam reached her and grabbed her shoulders gently.
"I-" Evangeline turned to Henry to see him the way he was before; laying down on the table, with his eyes closed. Confused, she turned to Liam and forced a laugh. "I thought I saw a rat, sorry." She lied, her accelerated heart beat slowly decreasing.
How else could she tell Liam that she saw a dead person sitting up and talking to her?
I must be going crazy. Evangeline thought to herself.
Liam breathed out a sigh of relief, releasing her shoulders as he rolled his eyes. "You're so dramatic, Evan."
Evangeline nervously giggled, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. She noticed her tools on the floor and frowned, bending down to pick them up. Liam kneeled down as well, helping Evangeline gather her fallen tools. Their hands brushed ever so slightly causing them both to blush.
After they placed the tools in the designated area to get sterilized, Liam faced Evangeline. "I'm supposed to be on lunch break but if you want me to stay behind and defend you from some rats I can do that." Liam said with a slight smirk when he saw Evangeline roll her eyes.
"No, no," Evangeline turned Liam around to face the door and started to push him out. "Go enjoy your lunch break. I'll live."
Liam chuckled and sent a small wave towards Evangeline before exiting through the doors. She watched as they slowly shut, her heart finally back to normal pace. She shook her head, confused as to what happened. Perhaps her countless nights of barely any sleep were finally taking a toll on her.
"Phew, thank goodness you got him out of here. His cologne was really irritating me." Evangeline heard the same voice from before.
Her heart sank and she turned around only to see Henry sitting back up.
