The 300-something of the juniors in my high school were taken on a field trip, organized and led by the teachers, to a special prom-exclusive mall of sorts. This way, everyone is clear with who is going with who, and who is wearing what dress and what colors.
A small excited head pokes above a rack of tuxedoes. "Do you want to go to prom with me?"
"What??" I ask, obviously shocked. For some reason it didn't hit me that I needed a date until now.
"So...?" he asks me, looking down at me from the other side of the rack. His eyes grow big with wonder and awe.
"But I don't know you," I reply, trying to suppress a giggle. I will admit he was really cute and confident.
"Well, okay".
I need to break free from the crowd. My hands force a strong gust of air below me and I am elevated some 40 feet in this cube room. I fly back and forth from one dark purple wall to another with the stagnant air brushing my hair away as I race through.
It feels a lot like swimming, especially because when you are underwater, everything is so quiet. And I watched the terrified but excited high schoolers below me, in suspended motion. With my emotions cleared, I go back to my class.
I walk a bit down the aisle and am met with the same persistent face. "Do you remember me? You should answer my question. Will you go to prom with me?" Like a chipmunk, really, he was.
And for some reason his obstinacy wins me and before I can comprehend, I say "Yes." And with a grand smile.
"GREAT! See you at 7pm there!" He runs away into the crowd and I am left dizzy and bemused.
Running back to my class, I find the nearest, nicest guy I know and yell at him, "PINCH ME KEVIN."
"Why??"
"Because I know I must be dreaming."
"What?"
"I don't know who this kid is who is TAKING ME TO PROM?" I scan between the racks of clothes and point out the small boy. "Him."
"Oh, don't you know Nathan? I'm sure you do."
I turn from Kevin and am shocked to see Nathan right behind me. "HI! I'm Nathan."
What a relief?? To faintly know this kid who is taking me to prom??
...
And I can't remember any more of that dream.
