Unable to understand what the string meant as a child, she went around informing people of the strings she sees. Her parents thought it was just a child's imagination, but when she asked why her father's string went out of the house, the family came crumbling down to ashes. Her mother's string was cut, leaving her alone for the rest of her cruel life. She came to hate her child and blamed her daughter for the separation of the family she longed for. It was then, that Mingxi started to hate her talent, she thought of it is a curse, one which would ruin the rest of her life.

As years passed, she kept silent about the strings she sees, not wanting to repeat what happened with her mother to anyone else. She sees the couples thinking they'd get married, with the string of one connecting to another. It hurt her, she didn't want to know of people's sins and mistakes. She didn't want to know that somewhere down the line, one would get heartbroken. People wouldn't believe her even if she said that she could see the strings, after all, it's old folklore. Very few believed it, she couldn't seek help even if she wanted to. She had to live the rest of her life, seeing the fates of others.

She herself looked down at her pinky only to be faced with a singular cut string. She didn't know why her string was cut, the gods must've been unfair on her, giving her a curse and giving her no fate. While everyone had strings as a child she was alone, with no future and no excitement to look forward to. In seventh grade, she had a friend who was dating a young boy the grade above. Mingxi knew that it wouldn't last as her string was attached to another outside of their school. When they did split and her friend came to her, Mingxi replied with,

"Why are you crying? There's someone else out there, you two were never going to last."

She didn't know how to word herself, she never figured it would hurt someone, especially her friend. Her friend, upset over the harsh reality of her words turned against her, spreading her cold-hearted ways to everyone she knew, leaving Mingxi isolated and alone for yet another period of her life.

She gave up on ever finding friends or love. Her string was cut and her way of wording hurt others. She was alone for the rest of her secondary years and possibly the rest of her life. With holidays coming to an end and the start of higher education and vast amounts of people, she could only imagine the strings she would see, the amounts of ruthless actions taken. It only brought pain into her heart knowing that she couldn't do anything to align those destined in the right path. She was only the informer, the two destined had to choose the right choices or they'd forever be alone. It was a curse that hurt her, it brought nothing of joy to herself.

With the gates opening, signalling the start of yet another period of her life filled with cold air, she walked through the gates into the university.
