Those Ocean Eyes

Weeks had passed since we scavenged around my uncles home, every night I looked at the same log books, same pictures and same letters and nothing stuck out but I just kept getting a bad feeling every time I got them out to look at them. Everybody in the village had been too terrified to go to work since the body had been found in the park but we all have to move on with our lives sooner or later right.

Alissa had gone back to work and I was currently walking down the road to the Cafe enjoying the fresh breeze of the early morning air, head phones in listening to Billie Eilish which always gets me into deep thinking when her voice starts singing.

"Morning, I think it's safe to say that this is the first time you've actually come to work on time, we might have to get the party poppers out" Doris smiled as I entered the cafe noticing that it was a lot quieter than usual. Great another long day with nothing to do.

"Wheres Harold today? That old creep.. er I mean my best boss is always waiting for me to come in at this time" I asked Doris forgetting that I was talking about her husband for minute. Doris shrugged and muttered something about kicking him out. Good riddance to him, he was always feeling my behind and smelling my hair whenever he walked past me. Gives me shivers.

Business was unusually quiet today and the weather was murky and miserable which is normal for Yorkshire unfortunately.  I was stood cleaning the same small corner table that I had cleaned five times over in the space of a minute. Normally it would be so busy that I would be praying for quietness but right now I just wanted anybody and everybody to come in.

Just as I walked lazily back to the counter and let out a yawn, a group of four older men entered the cafe all dressed in black hoodies and jeans with the hoods up. I eyed them suspiciously and looked over at Doris who had stopped reading her Jane Eyre book to look at me with her eyebrow raised. They sat down eagerly at the table I had just been cleaning, it was in the corner and normally attracted only nerdy looking people and anti social people. All four boys started to put their hoods down and I tried to make myself look busy instead of looking at them.

"Are you just going to carry on wiping one key on the till or can I order sometime today?" I heard a husky low voice that made me feel like I was in a dream but also made me look up and my heart skipped a beat for it was very rare that we would get good looking men in this village and they were definitely not from around here. This man looked the eldest out of the four and had a sharply defined jaw with perfect facial features and a bit of stubble. He had rolled his sleeves up to show his collection of tattoos but the thing that attracted me most was his eyes, the bluest eyes like oceans, ocean eyes and ones I had seen before.

"Your not from round here" I blurted out frowning and then cleared my throat before actually thinking about what I was to say. "Sorry busy day ha, What would you like?" I looked back to the other three boys huddled together making it hard to see what they looked like but they were talking in hushed whispers.

"Three espressos and a Cinnamon Latte, make it quick we aren't staying long seen as the cafe is so busy" He muttered sarcastically looking around at all the empty tables and chairs in the cafe. His group being the only people in there. Doris had now jumped up and started making the drinks and also put four carrot cakes neatly onto the tray as a welcome. I grabbed the tray gently and slowly started approaching their table, getting nervous to approach the model looking men, they all looked to be their late twenties, early thirties.

"There are cakes there as a welcome because my boss noticed you haven't been before, I hope you enjoy" I quickly threw the tray down, coffee and cake nearly jumping off the tray. As I started to scurry away, Mr blue eyes grabbed me by my wrist and pulled me down to his eye line.

"You look familiar, you live round here or outside of town?" It was like he was looking right into my soul, trying to suss me out.

I nervously pulled my arm out of his grip "Do you know how many times I've heard that pick up line before from people like you? Keep your hands to yourself blue eyes" I walked off towards Doris, I quickly peeked over my shoulder to see him staring right at me, angry face, eyes narrowing and his little minions looking a bit shocked.

"Men eh? oh speaking of men here comes Harold, stay behind the counter sweetie" Doris was eyeing up the door that had now swung open and bounced back off the wall and heavy footsteps were pounding our way. I stood in front of Doris watching as Harold stopped, looking right down at me, his belly nearly looking at me in my face. I heard Doris whisper quietly to Harold that he should go, she didn't want any trouble in front of the customers.

"This has nothing to do with you sweet cheeks so I'd prefer it if you move out of the way..Now" Harold tried to say lowly but he was one of those people whose voice could be heard from the next street down. This had attracted the attention of the group of men who were now looking to see what was happening.

"Excuse me Harold but Doris is working and doesn't want to speak to you today so be the bigger man about it and jog on" I suddenly got pushed hard into the rack that held the coffee glasses which had now smashed not onto the floor but onto my arm. Blood was now running down my arm and I tried to focus on the situation at hand which was getting me riled up. Harold had now trapped Doris so that her back was pushed up to the wall and he had his fist raised ready to punch down.

I ignored the pain and glass that was now stuck in the arm and ran in front of Doris and closed my eyes awaiting the impact of his fist but felt nothing. I felt Doris clasped onto my arm and pressure on my injured arm. When I looked up, one of Mr blue eye's men had their black hoodie tied onto my arm to stop the bleeding. He was looking at me intently, he had short tousled brunette hair and was covered up to his neck in tattoos, he looked familiar. The other men were stood behind blue eyes who had turned Harold around and had a gun pointed at him. What the bloody hell was going on here?

"Never ever disrespect any women like that! I suggest you get out of here quick before I blow your brains out and don't ever think of coming back here again because I will find out and it will be your body found at the park next" Mr blue eyes uttered dangerously somehow making my belly have butterflies at his dark voice. Harold had slowly side walked out of the door keeping an eye on the gun. When he disappeared, the men started to gather there things and walk out. I ran to catch up with them.

"Wait, who are you? I mean you saved us, we owe you a thanks" I said not expecting them to turn but they did.

"I'm a policeman from Edendale Station, I go by the name of Rob, don't thank us it was nothing and by the way back there, it wasn't a pick up line, I know you..Krissy" I gulped hard as blue eyes who was supposedly called Rob and his gang walked off leaving me to come to terms with what just happened in the cafe. Policemen? We don't have an Edendale Station! And most importantly where did he know my name? I certainly wouldn't mind screaming his out soon, okay Kristina I think you need your head checked out along with your arm.

Doris had taken me to the hospital that afternoon and shut shop early, we were in absolute silence trying to figure out what the hell just happened, it was like being in a movie and it was terrifying. I couldn't get Rob out of my mind for the rest of the night, he had seen me before and I knew them ocean eyes from somewhere but I just couldn't put my finger on it...
