Dezzie for short

I think it was a Sunday. Early June, and i'm not sure why but i chose that day to go outside and look around. Now i'm not gonna sit here and tell you that i loved being out there in the first place. Truthfully, i hadn't been outside of my apartment save walking to my car to go to work.

It was ridiculously bright that day, summer in Rhode Island had never been my favorite. I stood out on the sidewalk and stared at the ground till my eyes found their way onto a tiny roly poly, I hadn't seen one in years and I was invested in this tiny bug for some strange reason,
so invested I didn't seem to notice the gigantic dog barreling towards me at full speed until he'd run right through me and I landed on my ass.
Stupid bright day, stupid cute dog... Stupid beautiful girl.
I looked up from the ground to see a rather tall girl with curly red hair, completely out of breath.

"Oh no i'm so sorry! His leash slipped he won't stop running are you okay?"

She spoke beautifully, I was stunned by this and the pain from getting knocked down didn't really help the matter either. But i managed to stutter out something idiotic
something along the lines of

"What no, it's totally okay I was just staring at a bug. Yes a bug a little bug the little ones with the shells?"
Nice going idiot. But she responded with no hesitation

"Oh! Pill bugs! I love those, you sure you're okay?"
I nodded and she helped me up. And we stood in this awkward silence, and then she seemed to remember her dog was still running and next thing I knew she grabbed my hand and we were running down the street.

We did catch up to her dog eventually, he'd stuck his head in a trash can a couple apartments down from mine and was eating something that smelled awful.

"JESUS ATLAS NO"  the girl grabbed his collar and tugged him away. After a couple tugs he sat politely as if he'd done nothing wrong. She giggled and looked at me.

"Thank you so much for chasing him with me, he runs so much faster than you'd expect him to" It was at that moment I noticed the dog only had three legs.

"He's a rescue, I just got him because they were about to put him  down because for some reason no one wanted a giant fluffy dog." She knelt down and kissed his nose, he seemed to smile.

"Oh I'm so sorry I never even introduced myself, Im Desiree or Dezzie for short." She smiled warmly, who knew someone's smile could be that beautiful. Dezzie was such a pretty name, nothing like Nev. Sounds like Neville, or Neevil. Gross. I didn't know how long I had paused to think but she was holding her hand out and looking at me. God Im an idiot.

"Everything alright?" SAY SOMETHING NEV

"Yes I'm okay. I'm Nevine, Nev for short if you will." That could have been a worse introduction, don't say anything stupid now.

"That's a name i've never heard before, it's so pretty!" she thinks my name is pretty, fuck don't blush no NEV DON'T I SWEAR. Annnndd I blushed. Damnit. You have to say something now, you keep pausing for strange amounts of time

"Thank you, yours is super cool too" She smiled. Good one, Nev.

"Can I walk you home?" Dezzie clipped Atlas's leash back on, I smiled and we started to walk.
