Year 845
Y/N's Point of ViewThis is where my story truly begins—a young girl living with the Jaeger family. But was I just a girl? Or was there something more to me than that?
Eren and I were sent to collect firewood. It's one of the many small chores we've done since I moved in with the Jaegers when I was four. Eren and I have been best friends ever since, practically inseparable. I was lost in thought when Eren's voice pulled me back.
"Y/N!" Eren called, already sitting beneath a large oak tree. "Let's take a quick break. I'm tired."
I glanced up at the branches swaying gently above us. "Yeah... I'm tired too."
We both flopped onto the grass, the warmth of the sun filtering through the leaves, and I found my eyes growing heavy. It wasn't long before I fell asleep.
I woke up to the sound of Eren's voice. He was arguing with Mikasa. No surprise there. I sat up, rubbing my eyes, catching the tail end of their conversation.
"Eren, you were crying," Mikasa said, her voice low but firm.
"I wasn't crying!" Eren shot back, wiping his face roughly. His eyes were red, but I didn't press him about it. Eren never liked to admit when something bothered him.
"Hey," I said, trying to change the subject. "Did you guys finish with the firewood?"
Eren nodded quickly. "Yeah, don't worry about it. Me and Mikasa got it." His face was a little flushed, and I couldn't help but wonder if Mikasa was right. Was he crying?
I stood up and stretched. "Thanks... but, Eren, if something's wrong, you can tell me. You know that, right?"
Eren avoided my eyes, shrugging. "It was just a dream, okay? One of those... the kind that doesn't feel like it'll ever end."
I felt a chill run down my spine. I'd had dreams like that too. But before I could respond, Mikasa interrupted.
"Let's go home before your mom starts to worry," she said, picking up the firewood with ease. Mikasa always acted like she had to look out for us, and, in truth, I think she did. Eren had this wild determination about him, and I... well, I wasn't sure yet. But I wanted to be strong, like her.
As we started walking back, Eren turned to me, eyes bright with that familiar fire. "When we join the Scouts, I'll protect you from the Titans, Y/N. We'll be free, and we'll travel the world together."
I smiled softly. He'd been saying that since we were kids. His dream of seeing the world beyond the walls never faded.
When we arrived back in town, we ran into Mr. Hannes. He gave us a casual wave, his usual laid-back grin on his face.
"What were you kids up to?" he asked. "Eren, I heard you were crying."
Eren crossed his arms. "I wasn't crying!"
