Prologue
"You can do this," Charlie muttered to herself, connecting the two wires together before glimpsing around the large vehicle. The engine gently purred to life in front of her. Smiling, she pulled herself up into the front seat carefully and stared out into the minimal light that lay ahead of her, beyond the windshield, and onto the road that would be her freedom for what could be a mere couple minutes or several years.
Fearing getting caught, Charlie didn't dare turn on the head lights and instead pressed the gas lightly, maneuvering into the growing darkness that enveloped the bus. Though scared of hitting something, she was even more so of being forced to go to prison. So she eased the wheel slowly to the left and pulled out of the parking lot behind the huge arena and onto the road.
The ride of the vehicle was smooth, and Charlie was grateful for it. She knew that the bus belonged to some sort of band, as it was parked outside of an arena that erupted with screaming teenage girls, but she wasn't sure of which. She didn't care which. It was the closest transportation device to her at the time that was a way out of town. No one was around it, as everyone was seemingly inside the arena. So she just took it.
When Charlie reached almost a mile away from the arena, she glanced down at the clock: 8:45 p.m. She wasn't sure of the band's concert's beginning and ending times, so she just wished that it wasn't anytime soon. She was too close to the arena. Too close to being caught. On the other hand, she was too close to freedom...
But freedom seemed to escape from her grasp too early. Damn, Charlie thought, the blue and red lights in the rearview mirror blinding her sight. Silently, she debated pulling over and accepting whatever punishment lay in front of her.
"Pull over!" a man's voice shouted over a megaphone.
So Charlie did.
