Kokichi's POV

After I rounded the block to make sure there was no way Shuichi was in ear-shot I pulled my phone back out of my pocket and dialed my second in command.

"Hey, boss-"

"Nope, Komaeda shut your gay ass up. Why the fuck did you call me, I told you I was gonna be busy until tonight." I was in no mood for my crew's usual bout of fuckery, especially when I was having so much fun teasing my Shuichi.

"Well, I just wanted to inform you that we're already seeing some piggy traffick near the apartments. I've already informed the others to begin the preparations...but..."

"But what you bagel-fucker?" I picked a cig from my pack by lightly biting it, then used my lucky Zippo to light it.

"Why are we staging a heist, and why-"

"Listen, all you need to know is that this score will only work if the Piggly-wigglys and their incompetent wranglers are distracted. If tonight goes well it'll be the beginning of a whole new chapter, and hopefully, it ends with a whole new kind of upper hand..."

Shuichi's POV

"Alright, so does everyone understand the plan and their roles?" Taka asked the entire cramped boardroom, which was stuffed to the brim with detectives familiar to the case as well as quite a few ordinary officers. The resounding reply was a determined yes, spoken with malice from almost all of the detectives. I was the only one to not reply.

I waited until my uncle had dismissed the meeting, with eight hours still to go everybody was antsy and eager to begin rolling out, it didn't take long for the room to clear. Taka was proudly looking over his strategy, modeled out on the large table with clay figurines. I anxiously approached and cleared my throat, notifying him that I had yet to leave.

"Was something the matter, Shuichi?" Before I got the words out of my mouth, Taka replied to himself. "You're upset about your placement, aren't you? Listen, I know I assigned you this case, but we have reason to believe this will be incredibly dangerous, possibly on a shoot out level. You're a tough kid, but you don't need to risk yourself like that, that's why I put you on the third line outside."

He placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder before giving it a hearty smack that, honestly, might have popped my shoulder out of its socket. I huffed out a pained breath and rubbed my shoulder, praying that I was just being dramatic and that the pain would subside.

"Uh, no actually, I was going to say just the opposite really... This situation is terrifying and is suited for professionals. I know I'm a prodigy or something, but I'm just not cut out for these high-stakes raids quite yet... So, I was going to ask if I could stay behind and just work on files and paperwork..."

Taka had a confusing and conflicted look of disappointment and relief upon his face. I could tell he wanted to encourage me coming along for what was surely an all but guaranteed victory in his head. Yet, he was truly terrified of putting me at risk.

"Alright, I suppose I'll let Kyoko know, although I can tell you now that she'll never let you live this down." Taka teasingly punched my right arm and pulled out his phone, likely to text Kyoko about my change of heart, which I would certainly get shit for later, but that didn't matter.

What mattered was all of the clues that the Thief had laid out for me, and seemingly me alone. I decided to trust my gut feeling, the apartments had to be a distraction for the force to focus on instead of the warehouse. I was still unsure of its significance, but I knew that it had to be the actual location the Thief was talking about in his mysterious notes. 826 Riddle Street, an abandoned warehouse, or at least it appeared to be. So, instead of going to the apartments or staying at the office, I was going to possibly risk my life by meeting a lunatic, alone. No backup, no one knowing where I would be...
