AUTHOR NOTE: Pictured above is missing grad student, David Zhang.
In the tiny university office shared by two T.A.'s, Felicia Harper sat alone and typed an email message to Shepard Krausse.
She did not forward the email Professor Clarkson had received from David's mother in China. Instead, she summarized the message in her own words.
She did not send a copy to the campus police.
Without wasting a syllable, Felicia told Shep only what he needed to know.
When she was happy with her composition, she tapped the Send button and watched the message zap out into the ether. Felicia smiled. All was right with her world.
Miranda emerged from her house and closed the kitchen door behind her. She yipped when a pair of strong arms lifted her off the top step, onto the grass, and gathered her against a water-soaked wall of man. She began to laugh, but he cut her off with a kiss, and then another.
Finally, he relaxed his hold, and Miranda stepped back, swiping excess liquid from the front of her clothing. She grinned at Shepard. "You're a louse," she teased. "A very wet louse."
"The better to slosh you with, my dear," he growled.
"I guess you saw my parents are here."
"Yeah, I spoke to them in the driveway. Nice folks."
"Well, Daddy is. Mother has a good heart, I think."
"They raised you, Bean, and that makes 'em perfect in my book. Why don't I treat all four of us to dinner in Live Oak tonight? I'll bet you don't have a ton of groceries in your house, and Carlo has the evening off, so cooking at home is out. We can bring back a doggie bag for the kitten."
She wrapped her arms around him and, wet or not, hugged him tightly. "You're just the sweetest man ever."
"That's too bad. I was going for 'heroic.' But if you like 'sweet,' that's what I'll try to be."
