When my alarm went off in the morning I woke up to immediate pandemonium.
"Camille! Clarissa! I let y'all have that extra thirty minutes of sleep I want y'all up and downstairs NOW!" My mom was screaming from the bottom of the stairs and I instinctively went to cover my ears.
"We're really gonna be dealing with this crazy woman all fuckin' day," Camille groaned as she flipped on the light switch. "C'mon Clare-bear, you know she won't stop until she hears some activity."
I did a deep stretch and willed the exhaustion to leave my body. My older sister Camille and I were definitely way too nervous to get any sleep the night before because of nerves, but neither of us would admit that out loud.
I half heartedly dug my orange iPod nano out from where it was buried under my pillow and stuck it on our alarm speaker that charged while it played. I scrolled to "shuffle songs" and immediately 'Roses' by OutKast came on.
"Oh now we're talkin'," Camille cheered as she stuck her toothbrush in her mouth. She motioned for me to turn it up as she poked her head out from the bathroom connected to our bedroom. I obliged and restarted it just so I could complete the piano intro at full volume.
From that song on the rest of the morning was a huge blur. From the airport to a layover at the airport to finally landing in the place where Cam and I would call home for the next couple of months -- Canada.
Camille and I had been making music together since I could form words. We called ourselves 2CStrangers and had been posting our music and covers on MySpace and YouTube for the past couple of years. When our fanbase began to gain more traction we also got interest from an executive at Hollywood Records. It just so happened at the moment they were holding auditions with the Disney Channel for roles in their new TV film Camp Rock set to release the following year in 2008. Next thing you know we were auditioning and we got the part just like that.
We'd spent the last couple of months back forth from Houston to L.A to Canada to Atlanta and back. working out the record deal and recently rehearsing for the film. Now it was the beginning of September and instead of going to school, her college and me in high school, we flew to Canada to shoot the movie. Which explains why our mom was running around like a chicken with her head cut off.
While we waited for her to double check and double check everything one more time we sat in the beds in our hotel room with Disney Channel on. The channel choice was our younger brother Christopher's choice because the past couple of weeks Camille and I had made some silent agreement to avoid it as much as possible just for sanity purposes. Stressing over being on that very channel soon was nerve wracking.Just as I was getting lost in my book of choice that I'd read on the flight, Twilight by Stephanie Myers, the Jonas Brothers' 'Hold On' music video came on the television. I closed my book without even marking my spot and Camille yanked out her headphones.
We turned to look at each other at the same time and slowly started singing along. We jumped off the bed and began thrashing around in a way that would definitely cause our mom to have a heart attack if she were to catch us.
Christopher ran to turn the volume up and headbanged with us, his big afro swaying along.
"That's gonna be you guys," he exclaimed out of breath when it ended.
"You think?" Camille said with a grin. "I think our hair looks better than theirs." She swept her asymmetrical bangs out of her face and behind her hear and I blew air into the bangs I'd cut in a fringe style across my forehead. Our momager (mom and manager) shrieked initially when we debuted our new do's prior to auditioning, but considering Camille had just turned 18 in June and at the time I was going on 16 there was really nothing she could do.
