It was finally the day. It was best friend's birthday, and he was finally going to get the party he deserved.
Kevin and I had been friends since we were fifteen, just a year before he dropped out of school. I was new and we had sat next to each other in our math class. When he was in and out of the hospital, I was the one who would bring him his homework for a while. Ten years later and we were still two peas in a pod.
About a year ago, we ended up moving in together. He moved into his new house and I was in the need for a place when my rental agreement ended. This would be his second birthday in the house, and he had yet to have some big birthday celebration in his "new" home.
Kevin was never the person to worry so much about his birthday. Usually he would hang out with some friends or his family. He just wasn't that person.
His mom and I had been talking and she was just as excited to plan something as I was. She talked his dad onto taking him out for the morning while we set up. A few of our other friends were excited to help as well.
I heard a knock on my bedroom door. I looked up from my desk to see Kevin. "Hey, my dad's here if you want to say hi before we head off." He said. He always asked because I was so close with his family.
"Yeah, I'll be down in a sec." I replied, giving him a smile. He nodded and smiled back, heading down the hallway to the stairs.
I snickered to myself. Kevin hated surprises, but I was that asshole friend who really didn't care.
Kevin deserved something nice for his birthday. For the last few weeks, so much had happened that ended up bringing his mood down. First, several pipes in our home burst. Then, he works constantly, pushing two videos a day for a few days, and then on top of all that, Kevin went to the doctor for his shoulders, hoping they were getting better. Turns out, they haven't improved at all and he's considering physical therapy, even though he doesn't want to.
I shut my laptop and made my way into the kitchen where Kevin and his dad were talking. They turned to look at me and his dad smiled and gave me a hug. He was always a second dad to me, which I was forever appreciative of.
"Oh, happy birthday, Kevi." I said , reaching up to pat his head. "What are you guys up to today?"
"I'm just gonna take Kev out for lunch and maybe a movie or something if he's feeling up to it?"
"As long as I don't get hit by a car again." Kevin said, recalling the time that he was actually hit by a car.
"That happened one time, Kevin." His dad said.
"And I've never been the same." He said, shaking his head. "What are you doing today, (Y/N)? Do you want to tag along?"
"Oh no, I dont wwnt to ruin your father/son time!" I chuckled, "I have some paperwork to do and then I'm going to cook some dinner and a cake for you."
"Nothing big, please." He replied, "You know I don't celebrate my birthday."
"I know, but you need cake on your birthday no matter what."
"Fine." He chuckled, grabbing his jacket. "We will see you later then."

"They're gone." I said as Kevin's mom answered the phone.
"Great! I'll be there shortly." She replied.
"Can you pick up the cake from the baker? I already paid, it just needs picked up."
"Oh! Absolutely!" She exclaimed. "I'll see you in thirty."
I hung up and began the process. I began to clean up what little mess was still left in the living room from Kevin this morning. Then I started to blow up some of the balloons I had ordered online. (I was even smart enough to get a helium tank).
❅
I was finishing up the last balloon when I heard the front door open. "(Y/N)? Can you lend a hand?" Kevin's mom asked. I let the balloon go and ran into the hallway were she was stuck on the door. Her purse strap stuck against the handle and the cake in her hands. "I'm in a little pickle I think."
I laughed and grabbed the cake from her hands, letting her unhook her purse from the handle. "I can see that."
She chuckled. "I pulled my car into the garage so he wouldn't see I was here."
"That's a great idea." I said. "I'll see if his friends can squeeze onto as little cars as possible and park down the road."
We walked into the kitchen and I slid the cake into the refrigerator. As I did so, my phone vibrated and a message from Daniel popped up.
On our way with the food! Need anything before we get there?
No! I think we got everything. Max is getting a few last minute things for me!
Great. Be there in 15!
I set my phone down and walked back into the living room where Kevin's mom was setting up. We turned the television on and started watching some random show while we set up.
I looked at my phone as it went off. It was a text from Kevin's dad, letting them know we were on the way.
"They're on their way back!" I said. "So remember, I'll come in here and say I have a gift, and when he comes in to get it jump out and say surprise!"
"(Y/N), we know how a surprise party works." Max said in a sarcastic tone, playfully rolling his eyes.
"Have you ever actually been to a surprise party, Max?"
He looked at me for a moment, "No.."
I heard the beep from Kevin's dad's car and the side door opened. I ran into the kitchen and began pretending to look for what to make.
"Hey." He said, hanging his keys up on the key rack.
"Back already?" I asked, looking at my watch. "Didn't seem like you were gone very long."
He chuckled, "Must have been having fun without me then." His dad walked in behind smiling at me.
"I always have fun without you." I said, grabbing a box from the cabinet, setting it down on the counter. "Oh, by the way, I have a present for you. It's in the living room."
"Oh?" He said. "What is it?"
"You'll have to go open it, turd." I said, walking over towards the living room. He followed slowly behind.
"Surprise!" Everyone yelled, jumping out from their hiding spots.
He laughed and looked at me, "I said no surprise parties!"
"Your mom and I were just so excited. We had to."
He chuckled and gave me a side hug. "Thank you. I appreciate."
"There's a big cake too."
