(Lance's POV)
The first day of high school for us second years. The first years had already gone to school for a whole week before. My bus showed up promptly at 7am. I didn't get two steps up the stairs before kids started shouting 'Lance' and saying hi. I couldn't stop myself from smiling, these kids love me. I worked my way to the back of the bus, handing out high fives and fist bumps. I chose the seat furthest back to the left. I saw him and my heart lurched in disgust. Mullet. He sat in the seat next to me.
"Since when do you ride my bus, stupid mullet." I slur the insult knowing he'd get pissed, and that's okay with me, he pissed me off by being here. I honestly really only said something because I genuinely wanted to know, he's rode a different bus since elementary, why switch now?
"Because I wanted to see you, fuckface. God," Keith paused briefly debating on what he'd say next, "It's none of your business, Lance, leave me alone"
"Whatever, I don't care anyway"
The rest of the bus ride was generally quiet while I snuck a couple curious glances at Keith. He'd gotten taller, I noted. And if it was possible, even more handsome. His jaw was sharper, his face more mature. Girls swarmed him last year, constantly begging him to date them, he insisted that he doesn't like girls, but even I knew that was a lie. I looked again. He had his hoodie on so I couldn't see his hair, probably still a mullet. I didn't realize I was still looking at him when he glanced over at me, he quickly looked away. Was that a blush? No, probably not. But what was that look, hurt?
(Third POV)
Keith felt a stare. He's gotten good at recognizing the feeling. As he looked over he met Lance's curious blue gaze.
Keith looked away.
"What?" Keith said sarcastically "Am I too grown up for you to insult now too?"
"What?" Lance said blankly.
Lance registered what Keith had said. He wondered for a moment why Keith had said 'too'
"No, just wanted to see if you still had your mullet, Mullet." Lance slurred the insult. It ticked Keith off.
Keith whipped his hood off and shouted, "There! Is that what you want to see!" To Lance's surprise, Keith's hair was just above his shoulders, and it was pulled into a wavy black pony tail, his over grown mullet-bangs fell around his face. He's so damn cute. Did he really just think that!? "Look it's bad enough my Mom died, and I've had the worst summer ever! I don't need your bullshit right now, Lance!!" Keith stood.
"I- I'm sorry. I had no-" Keith cut him off "I don't need your pity! Just fuck off, we're not little kids anymore, you're stupid insults are tiring!" He finished as the bus screeched to a dead stop. Many of the kids flew into the seat in front of them, Lance saw Keith fly forward and caught his arm before he fell. He winced. The bus driver spoke over the intercom, "Sorry about that guys, there was a deer, everyone okay?" he asked. most of the kids just sat in shock or gave muffled replies of reassurance.
"Keith," Lance started, "What?" Keith's voice was quiet now but still just as bitter. "Why'd you wince when I grabbed your arm?" Lance said, cautiously now. "I didn't" Keith snapped.
