"Ow," Clarisse pulls the strings tighter on Juliette's corset. "I think that's tight enough, Clarisse." Juliette puts her arm around her slimmed waist. Clarisse smirks.
"You have to look presentable for the prince tonight if you are to dance with him." She smiles, though both know what is to come out of the ball tonight. The kingdom shall fall, but for the right reasons. Clarisse ties the two slender strings together in a neat knot.
"Yes, but I feel it's a bit much, don't you think?" Juliette smoothes down her pastel pink chiffon dress. "Especially if it's for nothing anyway. You know what I'm going to do."
"I would agree, but your mother knows what's best. Now, sit down, I need to do your hair." Juliette takes a seat on the red velvety chair in front of the golden mirror. Tension hangs in the air above the servant and the young lady. The last night they would be best friends. The last night they would see each other. On the table in front of them lies a clean fire opal blade, never spotted with a drop of blood. Tonight that will change, Juliette thinks to herself as she takes the smooth iridescent blade in her hands. She looks up into the mirror. Who am I? No one would suspect me to be an assassin, would they? She takes a deep breath and closes her eyes, going over the plan once more. Clarisse gently rubs Juliette's lips with a soft red lipstick. "Good luck, and it's been a pleasure serving you, Miss Montague." She curtsies, turns around, and leaves for the last time. Alone, once more. And alone she will be for the rest of her life. Juliette stands up and tucks the fire opal blade into a band on her leg, covered by her chiffon skirt. Her skirt drags against the floor as she delicately sashays across the room to the broad white doors. Tonight, Kade Louiston and his kingdom was going to perish.
Holding her skirt up, Juliette climbed the stairs in her heeled boots, making a soft clop with every step. Every step, Juliette takes a deeper breath, awaiting the ball where nightmares live. Prissy wealthy families file in and girls hoping to capture the heart of Prince Kade, who were once friends with one another in the past, smile at each other, but behind those smiles are death threats, just waiting to tear each other apart, but staying civil until the party's over.
The top of the stairs is where she hesitates, in awe of the grand abode that was the living space of Prince Kade, who was indeed what you could say was a real life prince charming, and a genuinely nice guy, from when Juliette had met him. He was a gentleman, and always had a charming smile on his face, and Juliette had to admit, he was mildly attractive. But, she was there for one reason and one reason only; get close enough to him and stab him in the back. Juliette was confident she could finish the job; she just wasn't confident that she could get away with it. She could see herself in the future, waiting nervously in a jail cell, tapping at the rope binding her hands together, awaiting silently the day she would be hanged for murdering a great prince, who had nearly conquered half of Europe at 17. The thought made her feel sick to the stomach.
The thought of not committing the crime came to mind, but she quickly pushed it away, because punishment from mother for not obeying her would be far worse than spending a few days in jail just to be hanged. Punishment from Mother would last for eternity, and there was no escaping. You could've asked Juliette's sister, who knew from experience, if she wasn't lying on the floor lifeless in a room of things that Juliette didn't know what. And Juliette didn't want to find out either. Juliette pushes all those thoughts away and walks into the grand doors of the palace, in which she is greeted instantly with the sound of glasses clinking together and murmuring from the wealthy parents in the room, who are hoping that their child gets together with the richest man in the world. Young girls are dancing the night away, awaiting the time when they will get a chance to see the charming Prince Kade. Juliette takes a deep breath and walks onto the floors of the palace.
"All hail Prince Kaden Louiston!" The Master Of Ceremonies calls out from his place at the enormous door at the other end of the ballroom. Through the doors walks in his majesty, in all his glory, basking in light and praise as girls faint at the sight of him. His brown hair is styled perfectly in an ordinary side part, and his white suit is crisp and clean. His deep blue eyes glaze across the room and his eyes meet Juliette's. His face instantly lights up, and his grin grows wider. Juliette's breathing sharpens and quickens as he makes his way to her after a speech. She knows what she has to do.
