It was new year's eve, the first year of high school. I was 14 years old at the time. Usually, my new years plans involved drinking hot chocolate and watching a Christmas movie at home until i passed out on the couch and woke up to a new year. But, not this year. I was in high school now, and my friends and I decided we would go out and do something fun for a change. Our own little way to feel grown up, I guess, as well as to enjoy ourselves since we were still adjusting to life at our new schools.
It was 6 pm and i was sitting at my dresser putting on some eyeliner and blush. I was running a little late as i could not decide on an outfit. After what seemed like hours of staring at my closet and trying on outfit after outfit, I had finally settled on something. I picked out a tight black turtleneck, a plaid, tan, tennis skirt, a pair of black tights and thigh high black boots.
A few minutes later, I heard my friend Kayla at the door and my mom, downstairs letting her in. I put on a pair of earrings and spritzed on some perfume and headed downstairs.
"All done, sweetie?" Asked my mom,
"Yeah, i think so", I replied,
"putting on a jacket?", she questioned.
i just shook my head
It was a pretty cold night. My mom dropped me and Kayla off downtown where we met up with the rest of the group.
After pleasantries, we headed towards the party we were going to. It was outside, and a huge crown had begun to gather around a stage.
That's when Dylan joined us in the crowd.
"Hey guys, sorry I'm late," he apologised.
He looked at me and smiled, but Nick pulled him aside to tell him something before I had the chance to even clear my head. At least he looked away before he had a chance to see the flush on my cheeks I could already feel creeping up.
"Hey Amber" , I heard Dylan say from behind me, and I turned around to face him. He pulled me into a hug, "Damn, you look good", he purred, in an obvious attempt to make me blush, which he succeeded in.
"As do you", I chimed in, trying to hide the effect he had on me. He smiled cockily, flashing his white teeth in a crooked smile. His dark brown hair covering half his face. He really did look good, in his all black ensemble. He always had a bad boy vibe going on which he pulled off effortlessly, but at that point, I was convinced he could wear a trash bag and still pull it off.
We danced all night to the loud music and Dylan and I flirted a little. I liked him so much, and although he flirted back, i was sure it was just what he did with everyone. It was just who he was, cool and flirtatious, and on the whole, out of my league.
At some point in the night I looked down at my phone to see a few texts from my mom, saying she wanted me home by midnight. I checked the time, it said 11:30. I panicked and pushed through the crowd. I was so disappointed. This was supposed to be the night I felt a little grown up and enjoyed myself a bit. I had been trying to push through, but high school had proven tougher than I had expected. This night was supposed to be good, and now it was ruined by a curfew. I would, once again, be home, alone when the clock struck midnight marking a new year.
On the walk to the bus station, I realised I hadn't said goodbye to my friends in the rush. I hadn't even said goodbye to Dylan.
'He must think I'm such a weirdo, now', I thought to myself.
Not a moment later, I heard a familiar voice, "Amber!, Amber, wait up!", yelled the voice from behind me.
I stopped and turn to see Dylan jogging to a stop behind me. I couldn't help but smile at the sight.
"What happened? Is everything alright?", he asked.
I explained the situation and he walked with me and even took the bus with me.
"You're spoiling your fun because of me", i said guiltily.
"I wasn't about to let you walk home alone", he said, "besides, I don't mind."
We got off the bus at the stop, which was still pretty far from my house. He noticed me shivering and took off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders. We walked together chatting and giggling. At a street crossing, he took my hand so we would cross together, and didn't let go until we had arrived at my doorstep.
"We made it!", i exclaimed, slightly saddened about our little trip being over.
"We did", he agreed, checking the time, "And with a minute to spare."
He looked down at me, and caught me staring at his face, I giggled causing him to smirk. We stared into each other's eyes like that, for what seemed like a small eternity. His blue eyes had never seemed so bright, or maybe i had never looked long enough.
And there we were, staring into each other's souls. Snow beneath our feet and Christmas lights twinkling all around the street. He held my chin and tipped it slightly and leaned in. I leaned too, our lips colliding in a soft, slow kiss. As our lips met, the Church bells rung and fireworks somewhere distant exploded filling the dark, starry sky with glittering colours. But nothing, not even fireworks, could make me open my eyes. Not in that moment. I was too consumed in that kiss, too consumed in Dylan. His mouth tasted sweet and his hand gently held my auburn curls while the other was wrapped around my waist, clutching tighter as the kiss got deeper.
We finally pulled away, smiling and blushing. The lights went on inside my house, but before i ran to the door, I gave him a little peck kiss on the mouth causing him to giggle this time.
From my bedroom window, I looked out and watched him walk away to his own house which was a couple of blocks away, all while clutching his jacket and sniffing his scent off it and obviously, smiling like an idiot. My first kiss, and it was magical.
