College Party

Wren's first day of college went exactly as she thought it would...awful. She got toothpaste on her shirt and had to change at the last minute. Then halfway to class, it started to rain, and of course, she hadn't taken her umbrella. Later throughout the day she got lost and ended up being late to a class. It seemed like the Universe was out to get her.

Now she was at a house party at some guy she didn't know's house. The party seemed to have died down and the RnB song playing from the speaker sounded almost haunting.  She had shown up with her friend Sarah, in the hopes of making some new friends. But now, Sarah was making out with a guy on the carpeted floor and Wren was alone on the couch, sipping from her plastic cup of way too sweet liquor, wedged between a kissing couple and a pile of jackets. The couple to her left was getting way too handsy and Wren decided to move to the backyard for a breath of fresh air.

Wren walked to the pool outside which was illuminated by pool lights, like a moth drawn to a flame.

"You feel like a swim?" She heard a voice ask behind her

She faced the voice, obviously startled "I, uhh, no"

"Relax I'm just teasing" Reassured the voice, who she could now see was coming from a guy sitting on the patio furniture smoking, "I'm Mick"

"Wren" she answered, walking towards him.

"Take a seat, come on." He offered

Wren obliged and sat across from him on a chair. "Is this your house?" She asked the boy

"Yeah, my parents house but they're almost never home so..." he trailed off, interrupting himself by sucking on the joint in his hand.

He offered Wren a hit and she took it, coughing when the smoke hit her lungs. Mick laughed, "You don't do this often, huh? he teased

"I don't really do anything that's even a little bit not boring" she quipped back

"I doubt that"

"It's true, I'm not really a rebel. I've spent my whole life trying to get into a good college to make my family happy, and now here I am, and I feel like I've wasted my youth" She ranted

She looked up at him, "sorry, that's a lot to just dump on someone I just met"

"Nah, it's okay. I get you" he reassured, offering another hit which she took.

They shared the rest of the joint and Wren enjoyed the conversation. This kid seemed to be a lot more understanding than she had assumed he would be. He was a popular guy, tall, charming, a nice face and an attractive body. Wren assumed he'd be shallow but was now rethinking that judgement. She had opened up more to this stranger in half an hour than she ever did to her therapist in months, not to mention this was the first person she had actually spoken to at college, beside Sarah.

Mick suddenly got up off his chair and took his shirt off, "You wanna do this or what?" He asked, and Wren's thoughts about him being a shallow jerk returned for a second.

"Uhm, I mean do you want to swim? You know, I uh, asked before" he explained embarrassed, probably realising what Wren was thinking from the look on her face.

"Oh yeah, Uh, I don't usually bring a bikini to house parties you know so, I think I'm gonna pass"

"Oh come on, just get in with your clothes on"

"I don't want to go home soaking wet" she giggled

He reached for her hand and pulled her up from her chair, then quickly dove into the water.

"If you don't get in here, I will splash you" he smiled

"You wouldn't dare" said Wren

Mick splashed a tiny bit of water towards her and they both laughed

"You know what, fine yeah"

She took off her shoes and socks  and was now in a top and a pair of shorts, and jumped in with him, splashing him back.

They laughed again as they kept spraying water at each other like little kids.

For a moment, she looked into his eyes and he looked into hers. They leaned into a small kiss and then, a bigger, deeper, more passionate kiss. They made out, in the pool, fingers trailing up and down each other's backs. Mick grabbed her thighs and pulled her up with her legs around his hips and they kept kissing until they almost drowned, leading to more laughter. They kissed a bit more, this time underwater, and then floated around, looking up at the bright stars, talking about existence. Wren eventually started feeling cold and they got out of the pool and dried off with some towels.

"Was that not boring enough for you", he asked her, as she shivered

She smiled through bluish lips, "that was exhilarating"

They went up to his room, and he gave her some sweatpants and a teeshirt to wear since her clothes were dripping with chlorinated water. She went in the bathroom to change. She had a little freak out moment in the mirror about what had just happened, and used a cotton pad to wipe the eyeliner that was now smudged under her eyes.

She checked her phone and saw 12 missed calls from Sarah, and some drunken texts "Heyyh, did u lesveee?? I'm goiing to Jason's house, don't waiit up!,"

Sarah had left her stranded. She was about to order an Uber, when Mick suggested she stay the night.

"The house is empty anyway. You can sleep in my parents' room or the guest room or something if you want" he offered

"Are you sure?"

"Honestly, it gets a bit lonely in here, so yeah absolutely"

They cleared up the stuff from the party and then went upstairs to watch a movie in his bed. He put his arm around her when she leaned into his shoulder, and played with her hair. She liked the way he smelled and before she knew it, she had fallen asleep in his bed.

The next morning she heard his voice whisper, "Hey, Wren?"

"Hmm" She moaned, still half asleep

"Do you have class this morning?"

"Not until 2"

"Okay"

She felt his arms wrap around her as they both went back to sleep.
