The other person housed on the fourth floor was a girl named Constance. She woke up just as Howalk exited his room, emerging from the door across the hall.
"This is Maria?" She asked him.
Howalk nodded.
The girl, with unruly blond hair and sharp eyes, studied me, and I stood unmoving.
"You're so skinny." She stated.
"I'm a sufficient weight for my height," I said.
She shrugged. "You look skinny." She moved past Howalk.
I looked to Howalk, my eyes following up half of his torso before finding his eyes which were at least a foot higher than my own.
Nobody had ever made me feel small before, but he did.
He didn't say anything and turned to follow Constance. She sat on the central countertop of the kitchen area at the end of the hall, a big carton in her lap and a spoon in her mouth.
"Want some?" She offered, speaking to both me and Howalk.
Howalk removed the spoon from her mouth. "Ice cream for breakfast, really?" He asked, his tone fairly light considering this sounded like a correction.
She reached for the spoon, but he kept a firm hold on it. "I don't know any better." She said.
He allowed her to take the spoon back.
Constance looked at me. "You sure you don't want any?"
"Without a proper diet, I will lose my stamina," I responded.
One of her brows curved up. "Okay then." She said, stabbing the spoon back into the creamy substance before taking another bite. "If you expect to make me feel guilty, nice try."
Howalk poked the back of her head from behind the counter, where he now stood with a ration bar in hand. "Leave her alone Connie." He said, his voice low and free of any indication of feeling like it had been earlier.
He threw me the ration bar and got another one, which he began to eat. I ate mine as well, without any questions.

The tandem helicopter jolted slightly as we landed on Korean soil. I squeezed the Lieutenant's hand at the sudden movement, whether that was a gesture of comfort for my sake or his I can't say. The sound of blades slowly subsided.
"Steady soldier," He told me.
I released my grip, stolid as the large ramp lowered. Soldiers undid their safety belts and exchanged words of relief. Flying over the Sea of Japan was a dangerous feat for an American aircraft.
