You ran your fingers through your (h/l) (h/c) hair, letting strands loosely fall around your face. While doing this, an exhausted sigh escaped your lips.
You had been working too hard, just to please others. You never said no to anyone, no matter the favor they would ask for. Honestly, you knew you needed a break, but you were fearful as to disappoint someone by not completing a task for them.
Currently, tonight's dinner for a select group of exwires was being prepared by, none other than yourself.
Rin Okumura, another exwire whom you'd heard of, had been asked to assist you. He'd only done so because he was asked to, not because he would want to.
At first, you thought that he may have been in a similar situation, unable to say that he didn't want to. However, that thought had quickly been released when you discovered that his educator had forced him to do so. Obviously, this 'Rin' boy didn't want to help you; he was forced to.
Now, he had abandoned you in an empty kitchen, with your only company being a small radio. The device barely released any sound, causing you to lean towards it if you chose to listen to music. You placed your ear to the speaker, and were met with a soft and steady roll of static.
You groaned and pulled yourself away from it, taking a look around the kitchen. The sinks were filled with dishes, while the clean ones were eagerly awaiting placement on the dining room table. About half the food you'd cooked so far had burnt, and the other half was getting dangerously close to doing the same.
"Damn!" You cursed loudly, jumping to the stove.
Already, the Sukiyaki you had begun to prepare was looking sickly, and the scent wasn't doing much good for you either. You racked your brain, searching for the few ingredients that you knew you'd forgotten. You'd already soaked the beef in a bowl of beaten eggs, and had added the chopped vegetables to the soupy mixture. However, there was a looming sense above you that screamed something was wrong.
"(Y/N)?" Rin's familiar voice could be heard behind you, surprisingly standing out from all the banging pots and pans.
"Sorry-sorry-sorry!" You began apologizing, as you always do. Gritting your teeth, you realized how often you do the same things.
You'd taken Shiemi's offer to prepare dinner for the exwires, but were miserably failing at it. Deep inside, you knew that the blame should partially be placed on Rin, as he wasn't assisting at all, but you weren't rude enough to say so aloud.
"No, it's fine," his voice now hung in the air, seemingly louder than before, as if he was closer. You swiveled around to see him with a few paper bags. He began to set them down, and rushed to help you with the Sukiyaki. "I should be the one apologizing. I'm sorry, I only went out to get more ingredients."
So he hadn't bailed on you. He'd only left to buy supplies for the dinner. You sighed in relief, relaxing your posture. While stirring the stew, you felt Rin's presence behind you. His arms seemed to appear from the air, and he took over the stirring.
"Did you put in the mirin yet?" He asked politely, grinning widely.
You mentally hit yourself for forgetting. You apologized to him once more, before scurrying off to find the ingredient he had asked for.
Finding the mirin, you returned and uncapped the lid. Rin seemed to be preoccupied with unpacking the groceries he bought, so you decided to add the mirin yourself. You slowly tipped the bottle, unsure of how much to add.
The liquid ran out slowly, falling into the soup gracefully. After a few tablespoons had fallen into the mixture, you were abruptly stopped when another hand clasped over yours, stopping you from overdoing the mirin-intake.
"That's enough," Rin quietly said, his hand still lingering over yours on the bottle.
"Ok," you whispered back, frowning when his hand left yours.
You missed the warmth and the softness of them, but you quietly kept to yourself. Simply thinking about your inner longing for the hand-contact made you blush profoundly. You stopped yourself in mid-thought, realizing that you should probably return to work.
"Rin?" Your small voice quivered in the air, echoing throughout the silent kitchen. "What should I do now?"
He stopped from his unpacking, and pointed a finger towards the sink that had filled with dishes. "The dishes should be fine. I'd prefer not to have you cooking, (y/n)-chan," he lightly chuckled at the thought of it.
You began to find your way to the sink, only to have your foot caught on something small and fluffy. A yelp escaped as you tumbled to the floor in a mess of clumsiness. You forced your eyes shut and quickly moved your hands out, bracing for impact.
However, when it didn't come, you found yourself surprised. You slowly opened one eye, then followed with the other. Rin's face met yours.
You scrambled to your feet, feeling embarrassed about the action. The only problem was that Rin still clutched you, as if he was in a paralyzed state. You tried to pull yourself away, but it did no good. The young boy held a tight grasp around your arms, his face in a blank face.
He shook his head, and blinked a few times, coming out of his trance. His hands were still on you, but they had loosened. "Be careful, you almost tripped on Kuro," he gently said.
You began to look down in search of Rin's familiar, only to be stopped by the boy.
"I- I- I'm sorry," you apologized for the seemingly hundredth time that day.
"Hey," Rin stopped you from doing it again, his breath tickling your nose. "Don't be."
With every inhale, the both of you seemed to be getting closer and closer. At this point, millions of thoughts raced through your mind, each focusing on an aspect of Rin. His eyes, now that you were close, were less of a blue, but rather a darker color. He always seemed to be wearing a sheepish grin, which you now realized, seemed attractive. His ties were almost always perfectly knotted, yet loose around his neck.
At this point, your mind was in a jumble, and you couldn't focus on anything. You felt your eyes grow wider, and your senses all inhance. The seemingly silent kitchen was now a roar of sound, full of whistling air and flickering flames. You could smell Rin, being that you were so close, his clothes giving off a berry-like essence. His touch was light and gentle, but surrounded you in a warm ocean of a hug.
For once, you felt safe.
With a last feeling of pure bliss, your lips connected with Rin's.
