The outer conscience;
enemy or friend
the inner conscience;
logic or emotion
They both have some bearing to us. Everyone single one of us. It's not the devil or angel on the shoulder. They are the small voices in your head that can be called instinct or some people call a "gut feeling". People presumptuously give them a sole role in decision making,
but they do much more than that.
When judging a person, figuring friend from foe, your outer conscience tells you what you should believe based upon the current state of things, or future events, while the inner conscience takes a different approach: it analyzes past events, how you perceived them, and gives you a decision based upon your emotions, or logical state of mind at certain point.
You can say that it isn't true, and that it's all chemicals and hormones.
I agree with that.
But what I'm trying to say, is that feeling of inner and outer conscience is creating by the symphony of hormones and chemicals, which create feelings, which all are affected by outer stimulus and genetic code.
