Killian lit the last candle and let out a breath seeing that his work was complete. It was their fifth anniversary and he was making it as special as he could.

Henry was at Regina's and Liam was at his grandparents, so there was no teenager or toddler to worry about tonight. The oven dinged and Killian made his way into the kitchen and took the roast out of the oven. He'd only learned to use the oven a few years prior but his cooking skills were phenomenal.

He sat the dish on the counter and there was a sharp knock on the door. Killian took his oven mits off and headed to the door, wondering who would be out at this hour.

He opened the large door to see his father-in-law standing anxiously in front of him. "What's up, mate?" He asked casually.

Then Killian noticed the dark circles under David's eyes, and the red, puffy state they were in. "What's wrong? what happened?" Killian asked, shaking in his boots.

A stray tear escaped David's eye and he took a deep breath. "Emma... she..." he stopped mid sentence.

"Emma what?" Killian asked nervously, escorting David in and sitting him down in the couch.

"S-s-she was on Main Street... and someone was running out of the pharmacy..." he stopped and his lip quivered.

"I was sitting in my patrol car and I saw her start chasing him... I followed them and he ran into an alley, Emma in tow... I pulled the car up next to the alley and started to get out..." he couldn't say anything more.

"Mate, what happened?" Killian's hand was shaking as he put it on David's shoulder.

"I was getting out of the car, and I heard... I heard the gunshots and the sound of running." Killian's heart sunk in his chest.

"Please tell me Emma shot the gun." Killian pleaded of his friend.

David just looked at him with dark eyes and continued. "I ran into the alley and... she was just laying there..." Killian's eyes were flooding with tears.

"I held her in my arms. Killian you have to know I did everything I could, it just wasn't enough. I should have been the one to go in that alley. It should have been me." He handed him her ring, a diamond swan curled up under its wing. He stared at it remembering that fateful night.

He pulls a note out of his pocket. "She gave this to me to give to you, she said that she needed you to know."

"Know what?!" Killian said through his cries.

"She didn't say. Those were her last words..." He stood up about to leave. Killian stood up as well but brought him into a hug.

"Don't blame yourself, Dave. Blame the heartless thief that took her from us." He said, still holding on tight.

David didn't say anything and made his way to the door. "I'll let you be alone."

"Wait... can you call Henry and ask him to pick up Liam and bring him home?" he asked wiping away tears. As much as the pirate in him wanted to be alone to drink his pain away, the father in him overruled and needed the company of his sons to grieve alongside him.

"Of course." And with that, he left.

The boys arrived and Killian had struggled with the kids saying things like, "Where's mommy?" and "Happy anniversary!" Pain was eating him alive.

He told the boys, and they took it expectantly, Liam, being three, threw a well caused temper tantrum, and Henry not believing a word he said, followed by extreme anger and punching walls.

Killian say on the couch staring at a worn picture of them on their wedding day, exchanging vows. It was her favorite picture because you can see the love in their eyes and the beginning of their happy ending.

Killian hadn't spoken in a week. He stayed inside of their apartment, staring at pictures and trying to find courage to read the note.

Henry was now nineteen and Liam was staying at his apartment about a block away, so Killian could cope.

He had only left the apartment once, to attend her funeral. That was the last place he'd spoken, and that was to give her eulogy.

The note sat on the coffee table, staring at him. Screaming, "read me! read me!" Killian scratched his now thick beard, wondering once again if he should read it.

He reached his hand out and grabbed the blood stained paper. He could make out 'Killian' written on the front.

He slowly unfolded the paper, glancing at the inside.

He read it to himself. 'Hook, Killian, I love you with all of my heart. I've loved you since I met you. I shouldn't have taken so long to bring my walls down. I should have let you in. I'm dying and I want you to know that if our love is true, if our souls are meant for one another, we will find each other. Our souls are destined to be with one another. No matter if it be hundreds of years, or a few months, we will find each other. Stay strong for Liam and Henry. Stay strong for them. You're all they have now. Let them know how much I love them. I will see you all soon. I love you all.
Love, Emma'

Years passed. Their children grew older and had their own children. Killian never stopped searching for her. He read that note every day.

One day he fell ill and found himself closer to Emma than ever. He died reading the note and finally found her.

He was finally reunited with his Swan. His everything.
