Brian
We walk into the cottage lit with dim candlelight and the faint smell of must. Standing in the corner was a familiar face.
"What took you so long Brian. You had Natalie worried" I didn't know what was scarier. His bitter tone or the expression on his face
"Nice to see you too Sunshine, but we had to take a detour. Large crowd." Before the grumpy face could say anything else Natalie ran in screaming.
"What took ya so long Brian," her arms wrung my neck as she jumped onto my back. "I should slap you for taking that long! You said you'd be back in thirty minuets." Bellatona's expression gave away her curiosity.
"Oh yeah! Bellatona this is Ryan and Natalie. Nat's my little sister," she gave a smile and nodded towards Ryan, then Natalie. "There's another one somewhere- there he is."
"Oi Bry, who's your new girlfriend. She's kinda cute, but not my type," he winked at Ryan who turned the corner and walked to the basement. Probably to workout or something.
"Ha Ha Devin, very funny. She's not my girlfriend, and plus She's one of the few survivors we were able to find"
"Always trying to lighten the mood. So what's her name?"
"Bell-"
"Bellatona. Its Bellatona, nice to meet you all." She made eye contact with the floor, shifting the weight between her feet. I could tell right away she didn't do so well with strangers.
"Well, are there any extra rooms for Bellatona to sleep in" I was trying to give her some time to calm down.
"There's the couch" Devin shrugged, and pointed to a light blue couch, eaten by moths.
"The others are taken man, unless she wants to share with Nat. You, as you know, share a bedroom with me. Ryan refuses to share, and then there's Natalie's room."
"I'll share with Natalie," I could tell she was super uncomfortable.
"I hope she won't mind."
I noticed her picking the side of her thumb where loose skin was starting to peel back.
"There's no need to be nervous Bella, I can call you Bella right?"
"Yeah sure. That's what most people call me." She kept staring at the floor as if it were going to break right under her feet.
"You're safe here. You can trust everyone, even Ryan. He's not a people person, but he's a great listener. " she mumbled something I couldn't quite understand, but I made out the word people.
"I'm tired if someone could show me where Natalie's room is."
"I'll show you my room. This is gonna be sooooo fun" Natalie grabbed Bellatona's arm and rushed upstairs to her room.
There was a brief moment of silence before Devin broke it,
"Well, any news of other survivors?" I reached into my pocket for my phone to see more texts come through. The time on my phone said 5:00. Only an hour and thirty minuets left until sunrise was supposed to come. If sunrise ever comes.I had been asleep for three days. I only woke up because my body started to respond to the lack of food and water. When I woke I didn't check my phone or anything. I just ran into my kitchen and guzzled four and a half glasses of water. When I was done drinking I went back upstairs to go back to sleep, but I checked my phone and it was 4:37 in the afternoon. My phone had new messages from the day before. I had fallen asleep With no new messages. I woke up with over four hundred and counting. All people I didn't know the number to. All displaying the same disturbing message, "Look outside at the moon. Its beautiful tonight" it was unsettling. I didn't think anything about it at first. I wondered to myself how did so many people get my phone number. I decided to text Devin and see if he thought something was wrong. There definitely was. I ran to my sister's room and woke her up. She was as thirsty and hungry as me. I told Devin about an abandoned house out in the woods and Devin told me not to look at the sky at all. To wear a hat, and stay on the down low. He explained to me everything he knew. Eventually we led Ryan here and now Bellatona. Ryan wasn't fond of us at first, but eventually warmed up a small amount. They didn't sleep as long as I did but they still had slept a while.
Eventually I grew tired and walked to the room I slept in. My bed was old and moth eaten like the rest of the furniture. I turned on my alarm for 7:00am just so I didn't sleep for an eternity, and drifted off to sleep
