Mia...
“It’s only your name that’s my enemy. You’d still be yourself even if you stopped being a Montague. What’s a Montague anyway? It isn’t a hand, a foot, an arm, a face, or any other part of a man. Oh, be some other name! What does a name mean? The thing we call a rose would smell just as sweet if we called it by any other name. Romeo would be just as perfect even if he wasn’t called Romeo. Romeo, lose your name. Trade in your name—which really has nothing to do with you—and take all of me in exchange." Her voice hung flat despite the stunning view before her. From her vantage point atop the veined outgrowth that served as the balcony she had a glorious view of the dim lighted gardens as dusk settled.
"Who are you? Why do you hide in the darkness and listen to my private thoughts?" she went on, waiting for her partner to say his sentence.
"I haven’t heard you say a hundred words yet, but I recognize the sound of your voice. Aren’t you Romeo? And aren’t you a Montague? “She continued, her gaze fixated on the high moon as its light brought out a silvery tint in her dark mane.
"Tell me, how did you get in here? And why did you come? The orchard walls are high, and it’s hard to climb over them. If any of my relatives find you here they’ll kill you because of who you are. " she didn't even listen her partner anymore.
She didn’t want to say it, but she didn’t have much of a choice. Swallowing up her pride she said, "If they see you, they’ll murder you."
Her arm started to ache due to the lengthy amount of time spent leaning against the balcony’s rough surface. She prayed this would all be over soon.
"I’d give anything to keep them from seeing you here."
Her partner didn’t look any better, in face he looked as tired as she felt.
"Who told you how to get here below my bedroom?” She mumbled.
"CUT! “A voice screeched followed by the distinct sound of several papers fluttering to the floor. "It doesn't work! I want to see emotion, I want the viewer to feel your love, your pain! I want you to breathe life to your sentences! I want you to relive the scenes, not playing! I want to feel! "
It’s shocking how just one voice could render the entire amphitheater into an eerie silence. You could almost hear the bustling of cars and the chatter of another life that existed beyond these walls. Here, they had their own little game. All eyes darted between the director and Mia's as well. She, however, wasn’t all that worried. She understood why he cut in; nobody gave it their all in the game.
"We will change Romeo, it does not work like that.” His voice cutting through the silence.
All eyes turned to the student playing Romeo up on top. He didn’t bother replying, neither did he look all that surprised as he hopped off the stage.
‘Lucky,’ Mia grumbled as she leaned against the forged terrace, the phony moon swung silently against its rod overhead.
"Okay, now we need a new Romeo", the director added as his eyes scanned the hordes of students. All trying too hard not to catch his eye. Yes, the role was one of the greatest in history but they had already went down that road all to many times; it was commonplace for them.
"I can play," said a voice announced. A voice Mia knew all too well.
He wanted to play Romeo. And she was Juliet. Her heart fluttered at the thought, just as it did in her dreams.
“I can play Romeo,” he continued.
At his words her heart sunk. It was only a game. He was not Romeo, at least not really and of course he was not her Romeo nor will he ever be. That didn’t stop her from staring at her new co-star.
"Well," concluded the director, "we will try again with you. That's it for today, work out your text for tomorrow!"
Mia tried to hide behind her hair in hopes of hiding her pained expression and the lump clogged in her throat.
Why did he have to make her feel this way?
It happened every single time. Not because she wanted him, but maybe cause she knew she could never have him.
"Mia, are you okay?"
She looked up and planted her best smile as she glanced at her friend.
"I'm fine " not. But she stuck with the lie, she didn’t bother with the truth. She never did.
