It was an Infection that coursed their system with only their stares silently pleading for salvation. He watched them all turn into brainless monsters, each and every one of them.
The alarms went off, filling the silence of their town and just like that, they dropped everything and moved like a herd of puppets being pulled by their strings, towards what? Seemingly nothing.
It had been particularly cold that day, the clouds were dark and heavy, the mood was down throughout the people.
He followed the crowd, curious as to where it took them, a part of the town he'd never been willing to go, he didn't want to be one of them, but this seemed important.
"Did you hear?" Someone had whispered through the ringing sounds.
He listening closely, guilty of eavesdropping, but something he couldn't help.
"Hear what?"
The voices were muffled making him move slower.
"The priest.."
He almost scoffed out loud, rolling his eyes.
Of course.
It was always the priest this, the priest that, our father this, the Lord this and that.It was almost like playing the only record in your home knowing there was only one song.
That's all they spoke about. It was always having to do with their priest! What was so special about a man with a book and a cross?
It was idiotic, but they were all under his spell, everyone followed his orders, the priest was almost in charge of everyone in this goddamn place!
Everyone was so blinded by these lies about their "god" coming to save them. They didn't know what was really going on and in all fairness, he didn't either, but he'd figure it out, because he listens.
He was so caught in his own thoughts that he almost ran into the person in front of him. He hadn't noticed everyone stopped and the fact he'd been pushed to the far back, away from everyone else.
His eyes caught the sight of the white building, their cross standing high over the chipped structure.
Everyone seemed to stop breathing and he didn't understand why? Whatever it was, it was in the front, that's where he needed to be.
"Scuse me, pardon me, sorry." He mumbled his words although nobody seemed to pay attention to his soft mumbling.
Pushing his way to the front, a distinct smell of rot hit his nose and his eyes began to water slightly, his stomach turned, he felt his skin lose its color, and suddenly everything felt colder.
He remembered the distinct sound of sirens mixed with the bells ringing louder than before, or was it just his heart beating in his throat?
"Dear God." Someone muttered and they all stared at the thing in front of them.
Their holy place of worship as most people put it was tainted red. It was marked with a crimson red and a defaced naked body was impaled into the front of their holy home.
It was a man, a pale man who's stomach was sliced open, his guts on the floor and he was positioned almost resembling Jesus Christ on his cross. The man's genitals were gone, leaving almost a hole in its place.
The man's head had two knives driven into the eye sockets and the worst part was the wording, it made his body run cold and his heart sank.
Written in sloppy blood across the entire front of their sanctuary;
THE DEVIL WALKS AMONG YOU
