"I know you told me she was cold hearted Donna but Jesus I didn't realise that Ms Black was so.. so.. intense" I admitted feeling relieved that lunch came around so quickly. "She's like the devil in an angels body, I could hardly breath let alone speak to her"

Donna smirked at this before she responded "Sounds like you've got a thing for your new boss," she winked at me and gave me a knowing look whilst we walked down the street of the final block to get to the cafe where we was meeting three of Donna's closest friends and secretaries of the firm.

"I so do not! I just didn't expect her to be that pretty... and she ruins herself anyway with the whole bitchy persona." I mean yes she was attractive but there's only so much looks can do for a person I thought myself. We arrive at the "The Grind House" cafe and to be fair to Donna it was worth the 12 minute walk to get to. I fell in love with the warm and cosy atmosphere almost instantaneously, the lights were an orange tinge and contrasted gorgeously off of the dark wood and maroon leather chairs.

Donna tutted "Oh come on, she's not that bad, you've only just met, you never know you may be able to warm up to her unlike the rest," we walked over to a corner booth between the window and the counter where the baristas were hard at work serving the fellow New York workers on their lunch. I loved the sound and smell of coffee being prepared, the beans being grounded, the steam wand, pouring, swirls, whistles, and the sift of chocolate being added onto a cappuccino, it's the little things that are the best.

Once we reached the booth with the three women who all looked different ages, Donna introduced us "Girls this is Ms Blacks new paralegal Madison, Madison this is Lily, Sandra and Penelope but just call her "Pen"".

I shyly smiled at them all and simply said "Hi," Lily was definitely the youngest, she looked similar to my age of 21, Penelope looked like she was about 26/27 and I estimated Sandra was mid 40s. I already knew Donna was 30 as we befriended each other on Facebook after she told me I had the job.

Penelope was straight up, giving me a welcoming hug and within a couple minutes we all started chatting away and ordered our lunch and drinks together. The girls were all so lovely and I felt like I had truly been embraced by the group by the end of lunch. I admired that the age gap between them all meant absolutely nothing and they got on like a house of fire.

Once we all walked back to the offices together I felt so fortunate that I had found a group of women to call my friends already and knew that having them around would always cheer me up, I feel like I'll need that when I have to face my stone-faced boss everyday.

I opened the door to my office and froze in the doorway when I saw Ms Black standing there against my desk.

"Where have you been?" She asked me, almost interrogatively, her caramel eyes boring into my own ocean blue ones.

"I went to lunch, Donna introduced me to a few of the secretaries here" I explained, even though I knew I shouldn't have to, I have a right to a lunch break.

"Okay and you didn't think to inform me of that, no?" She harshly asked me.

"Erm, no, I guess not. I'll make sure I'll tell you next time though, I didn't realise I'd have to."

"Well realise this... Madison" she said my name like it was something of disgust, "I am your boss and if I had needed you to complete some things in an emergency for me, not realising you had gone out, those things wouldn't be done would they?" She asked me daring me to answer, "No they wouldn't, so in future you will inform me if you are going out."

"Okay, sorry" I didn't really know what to say, it's my first day and she's being so hard on me already.

"I don't care if you're sorry, just get on with the work that I've left you and don't make me come in here again."
