"Envy."
"Huh?"
"It's called 'envy.' Jealousy? Desire for someone else's belongings and/or status? Never heard of it?"
"I- I guess I haven't. So... how do I stop it?"
"Stop- what?"
"I mean, y'know, get rid of the thing- the envy."
Cap looked bewildered. "A-Angel. You can't just... 'get rid of' emotions. It doesn't quite work like that."
Liar. "Well, this is unpleasant, and I'd like to stop feeling it."
"Well, personally," Cap said with a smug expression, "I think you'll find this is emotion will be of assistance for you. I suggest you keep those feelings in mind for the time being."
"No... No, Cap. You know I could never do that-"
"But- My Angel!" I gave him a nasty look. I wish he would stop calling me his "angel." I understand why, I'm the "angel of death" or whatever, but I still think it's... aggravating.
"You remember the reason why I stayed on this island."
"A-and you remember my promise! Right?" He's gotten flustered. Very unusual for him to be nervous. "I promised you, we'll flourish if this goes according to plan! You, me, everyone--I implore you, An- I- I mean, 'Vlinny'... do this for us."
He's really that desperate that he'd call me by my real name? I suppose he's got his reasons, some I can buy into, but he's aware that I could never go through with his "plan." It's too much. Far too much. He knows that. But, he's quite the persistent one, all right... Always has been. He could talk anyone into whatever he pleased.
After a moment of thought, and with a sigh, I gave him my final answer. "...I'll do it. For them. For you."
Captain practically jumped 6 inches off the floor. "Of course, of course! I knew you'd come to your senses, My Lord!" Another off-putting nickname. "My Lord?" That's a new one. Doesn't make it any better than "Angel," though.
While he proceeded to gush about how genius and fantastic his horrible plan was, someone slammed the door open, saying "no" repeatedly.
"Captain, I told you not to involve Vlin in your weird anti-human agenda. In case you've forgotten-"
"Purple, listen to me-"
"My name's not 'Purple,' sir," Lumber snapped, adding the "sir" in a sarcastic tone.
"Yes, of course, pardon me- now listen. I am aware of Our Ange- Vlinny's situation, as I am of yours. I truly do commiserate your reasoning for not wanting to comply with us. But Vlinny here--he... um. He's-"
"Oh, because he wasn't born like most people he's suddenly not allowed to make his own decisions?" That's not what he's saying! He just wants my help because he trusts me...
"I'm sorry, were those the words that came out of my mouth? No. It's because he's much more useful in this situation! Plus, he already agreed to do his part!"
Lumber's eyes appeared to cut right through Captain's. He wasn't having this. "You best be careful." His finger jabbed into Cap's chest. "Treat him like a tool all you want; it won't end well for anybody." With that, he stormed out of the room, leaving behind a suffocating fog of rage.
"...Well!" Cap spun on his heels to face me, masking his aggravation with a smile. "I suggest you return to your chamber before you overheat."
