Short Story #1: Kurst and Thor: Ragnarok

When Kurst sees Thor at the beginning of Ragnarok

The library was becoming as place Samantha loathed. When she decided to jump head first into the world after Ultron was vanquished to discover where she came from, and if other threats existed, she never thought she'd be where she was. Living in a magician's sanctum in New York, slaving over a library full of books in a language she didn't understand. And dealing with a wizard. Whose oversized head was second to only Tony Stark.

So much had happened. So much had come to pass. Sometimes Samantha needed a moment.

After spending too many hours in the library, telling herself about how nice the illustrations were in the books and trying to decide which cover was the oldest, she'd had enough. And ventured into the back ways of New York.

But she'd spent too much time breathing in fresh air and wishing she were like all the wingless people. The wings are her back only folded down to a certain size, and whenever people passed her they stared. She never got use to the stares.

It was bittersweet when she returned to the sanctum doors from her walk, and entered the ugly building (she hated the thing, it looked like a tombstone!). She let herself in, and started towards the stairs.

When she looked up, she stopped. Strange was standing near the stairs with a figure. Strange was playing with some magic in his hands.
Samantha was awestruck by while she saw. Standing near Strange was a familiar, muscular man with his hair pulled back into a ponytail. The god of thunder, Thor. Warmth in her chest quickly pushed out the shock. She tore out her headphones and waddled over to the pair.

“Strange made a friend,” Samantha said, “How cute.”

Thor spun around quickly. A smile broadened across his face, “Winged girl, by the gods.” He engulfed her in a hug, but Samantha felt her bones screaming for help.

He let her go before she could return the hug. Not that she was complaining, “I haven’t seen you since that Tony bot tried to kill us all.”
If Samanatha could list all the stuff she tried to forget about, she’d be writing forever. Samantha chuckled, “I don’t think I’ll ever forget the killer robot.” Ultron had been a crazy ride. Artificial intelligence designed by Tony and Bruce to protect the world gone crazy. It made her shudder thinking about it.

“So what are you doing here?”
A cough came from Strange, “I hate to break up the reunion, but we need to-“

“Loki pretended to be my father until I found out he wasn’t, and then he brought me to the front of a condemned building where he left my father. But father wasn’t there, and then my brother disappeared into a weird magic thing…and now I’m trying to find my father.”

Samantha nodded. She wasn’t sure how to respond to Thor’s long winded speeches. Though she did miss hearing the awkwardness that came from Thor.

“What about you? I thought you were braving the Universe to find…something something.”

Strange sighed, “Here we go.”

“No luck," Samantha said.

Thor didn't say anything for a moment, "What do you mean?"

"I haven't had any luck." Samanth was a little confused. Surely her answer sufficed. She was leaving out several details. Big details. And the journey that brought her to the sanctum   but Thor didn't need to know that right?

"But you're here," Thor smiled, "nor galavanting off on some...weird ass trip or slaying ogres. Or anything."

"Yes."

Silence fell upon them. Thor cocked his head, “Okay. So you found something?”

“No.”

"Your father is waiting!" Strange said. He pointed to the ring of magic. Samantha couldn't see what was on the other side of the magic portal.

"Well, duty calls," Thor clapped Samantha on the back. He walked to the portal, "I suppose I'll need my brother back."

"Right," Strange flicked his wrist and a portal opened. Samantha heard the faint screams of Loki. The sound grew louder and louder, until he crashed to the ground.

"I have been falling," Loki balled his hands into fists, "for thirty minutes!"

"You can handle him from here," Strange shook Thor's hand.

"Handle me?" Loki pushed himself on to his feet and pulled out daggers,"who are you? Some kind of wizard?"

No one said anything.

Loki continued, "Don't think for a moment that I'll-"

"Okay, bye bye," Strange waved his hand, and the ring of magic shot forward, swallowing Loki and Thor.  Then it vanished.

Strange turned to her immediately.  He didn't say anything. He didn't have to.

"Avengers stuff," She said.

"I know," Strange said, "though the relationship is a little confusing."

"Good," Samantha said, "you think you understand something. And the years go by and you realize you don't." She shoved her head phones into her pocket, "little Sammy bird has been bad. She hasn't been tweeting up her homies."

"Oh please. You sound like a broken record," Strange said, "I mean it's really-"

"Abnormal?"

"Creepy."

"I'll take it," Samantha headed for the stairs. She went up the first few.

"If you could go back in time and change all this," Strange said, "would you?"

Samantha stopped and thought for a moment. In the past people had died, and perhaps in those moments she'd change what she did. But he wasn't asking about those times. He was asking about when she ventured to find her heritage. Her history.

"No," She said. A faint hint of something swept across Strange's face. She had seen it a few times recently, but she did not dare bring any attention to it. She retreated up the stairs and back to the library where the piles of books were screaming her name.
