Dad left to get milk. It was an almost weekly ritual and Billy hardly even paid attention to the distant sound of the door closing behind his father.

For Billy, the only thing that mattered in the world at that very moment was his intense tournament of Wii Sports Tennis.  In the mind of a twelve-year-old, not yet exposed to the fucked up realities of the world, he decided that it wasn't worth intending to accomplish anything meaningful. For the time being, at least.

An hour went by, and Billy's mother called him down for dinner. Nothing unordinary occurred.

Under the passive-aggressive stare of his mother, Billy set the table. Nothing unordinary occurred.

Billy's mother pulled the pre-packaged frozen lasagna meal out of the microwave and onto the table. Nothing unordinary occurred.

Billy sat down at the table, always in the chair as far as physically possible from his mother. They cannibalized in silence, feasting on the blood and bones of their comrades and maybe even their neighbors; in the way that humanoid tomatoes do.

It was unnaturally quiet at the dinner table that night, Billy and his mother both acknowledged this, but neither cared enough to mention it to the other.

Eventually, Billy's brain cells connected in a functional way, and he realized that Dad wasn't home yet.

"Where the fuck is daddy?" Billy asked.

Billy's mother glanced up momentarily, realizing that she was an utter dumbass for not asking herself this already. It was almost as if she simply didn't give a shit about her husband's whereabouts.

"Dunno." She continued to commit her gluttonous hate crime upon her lasagna.

Billy finished his dinner in silence. What the hell, if his mom wasn't bitching about it, then it must not have been important. He left his place at the table and went back upstairs to finish his Wii Sports game.
