You know what the thing is about pain? You never see it coming until you can hear the tearing metal screaming in protest, smell the smoky air as you breathe it in, and feel the white hot pain as red drips slowly down your arm.
I wondered if this was what I had been praying for. If this was God's cruel joke, and that my prayers for freedom would be answered by death. Or maybe it was just His way if punishing me; after-all, I hadn't believed in a God for years.
It was impossible. To go through excruciating pain everyday, never knowing when it would end, or even if it would end. The sniping sound of scissors, the cracking noise of bones that had become normal for me as well as my brothers and sisters. A new race of super-humans, they told us. The beginning of a new era.
I knew all the words they whispered in our ears were lies. That the only light in the end of my bleak and desolate tunnel was death welcoming me with open arms. But I had never pictured it like this. Never with my freedom just barely beyond reach.
