the small, orange pup yipped as another tackled him to the ground. “moss! play nice.” aindrila scolded, shooting a sympathetic look at the orange fur ball specifically. mandarin groaned internally. i'm almost an apprentice, can they stop? “o-oh no, it's fine mrs. aindrila!” he said politely.
aindrila nodded, and swiftly stepped away to talk to his mother. he eavesdropped as best he could while still playing.
“oh my, aspene..they're growing up so fast!” aindrilla murmured, her eyes filled with love as she stared on at moss and chella; short for chellamani.
“yes, they are...” aspene gazed on at the puppies. he pondered for a moment, before having his side pummeled and being knocked onto the ground by a gray stripes puppy.
“moss!” he yelped, amusement present in his voice. “sorry mand.” moss said, snickering. mandarin growled, leaping at him—he missed terribly, instead landing on front of someone. dazed, the pup looked up, only to see the icy cold glare of the one and only baby-blue pup, mal. his sister, maleficent, to be exact. annoyance and angry settled on her face, and her lips parted in a small growl that only mand could hear. “get outta here, and watch where you're going.” she snarled. “sorry, m-mal.." he slunk away, fear evident in his stance: dark orange tail tucked under his legs hackles raised, tipped ears pinned backwards. maleficent snorted. “pussy.” she muttered darkly.
a loud howl was heard, and all turned their heads. there he was, the leader, standing on a blackened boulder, which was molded by centuries of paws into a slanted shape ideal for standing to make announcements. mandarin perked up excitedly, stumbling towards moss. “moss, it's happening!”
“i call together our constellated ancestors, and my loyal packmates, for a meeting around the scorched stone!” everyone padded in the clearing forwards, aside from nursing mothers, xylias, hushing the younger, aavyas, as they listened. “today, we will be welcoming two new kits to instead progress to apprentices.” he looked down, searching for them. “madarin, maleficent, moss, and chellamani—please step forward.”
the pups excited stepped forward, aside from mal; as always, she strode forward darkly.
the leader nodded, looking at moss first. “moss, young pup, your mentor will be coyle.” moss turned to the calico canine,  leaning up as his mentor placed an item around his neck—a direct copy of coyles lightning bolt necklace.
“mandarin,” he started, turning to the soon-to-be apprentice. “your mentor will be panthera.” mandarin nodded a greeting to the purple, feline-like canine and tried not to squeal like a aavya as a red crystal was hung from his neck.

chellamani,” gabirelle nodded at the ivory pup. “your mentor is bramble.” her necklace? a claw.
“maleficent.” he finally stated, turning to the blue aavya. “your mentor is tourmaline.”
tourmaline, also known as tourm or tour, stepped up quite nervously. mal was known for being difficult, mean, or straight up scary. tourmaline hesitantly put a necklace with a black circle gemstone charm around her neck.
mal just nodded, staring her mentor dead in the eye. tourm swallowed, and stepped away.
“meeting dismissed! hao!” he bellowed.
the apprentices stood with their mentors, aside from mal.
she slipped out of camp, seething, claws digging into the ground as she walked.
shes not even my real mom. why'd she look so proud?
