The beginning

My mother looked down at me, tears streaming down her face. Her blue jeans were ripped and there was three long scratches that marred her face. Inhaling her sweet perfume I felt better. She was going to protect me, she always does. Kneeling down in one knee she whispered in my ear that she loved me. Taking off her amulet, she twirled the intricate gold chain one more time and placed it in my pocket.

A darkness passed over her beautiful face, and her golden eyes grew troubled.

" You are our only hope now Ana, be careful who you love, for they are the ones who betray you"

Smiling a shaky smile she pushed of the floor. She raked her hands through her hair and let out a pained and desperate sigh. The sigh of a soul who has given up.

" You know what you must do now"

Trembling I nodded, hugging her tight around her legs. I retracted myself from her and took off for the forest, seeking the little cave hidden from sight. Sobbing, twigs and branches were scraping against my skin. Running as fast as I could, I was finally in sights of the meadow that mommy said was safe. I started panting, my chubby little legs straining from all my weight and all I wanted was to be home and got to sleep with Molly in my hands and Mommy and Daddy reading me a bedtime story. Clutching Molly in my sweating palms, I made the final break to cross over.

I hear my mother yell and paused.

"Lucien please" she begged.

Mommy was begging, she never begged. Not even when daddy hit her until her face was black and blue, until her eyes were sealed and unseeing. That was when he stopped. And yet she begged to this man, Lucien.

A bad men came out of the trees, made out of shadows and evil. Taking a step closer he looked at me, and I scrambled back. I was quivering at the sight of the man and he stopped and inhaled the air. In a blur he was next to me, he put out a hand and stoked my cheek.

"What sweet blood you have child

He scrutinized me and grinned. His blood red eyes were startling, the black of his pupil almost nonexistent.

"Master will be pleased" He murmured, content with the sight of the six year old child before him.

He stopped the finger that was grazing my cheek and in a swift movement struck my cheek. A thin line of blood dripped down and the shadow man snarled.

The white haze began to cloud over my eyes and I felt woozy. The haze filtering my senses was like cotton in my ears and cloth over my eyes. I could faintly hear mommy scream, and I grew angry. The white haze quickly swirled with red and I felt something release from my little body, and struck the man. I felt tired, no longer trying to cross the indivisible line to freedom and safety, I felt I myself relax. Curling into myself and hugging Molly, I fell into a blissful sleep.
