"Rosalind Sophia Donovan, get your butt back here right now! This is a very expensive dress that Miranda bought for your third birthday! You are so lucky I don't sell this thing and you for a better life!" Kelly Donovan fumed, refusing to chase the naked little monster around the living room. "Vicki!" Kelly screeched for her oldest daughter. Vicki Donovan was currently in the kitchen, fixing cereal for her younger brother's breakfast. She, Matt, and Elena were all carpooling with Mrs. Grayson for school. They were all attending Mystic Falls Elementary: Matt and Elena to kidergarden, Vicki to second grade, and Rosalind to pre-school. If their mom could catch her.
Vicki sighed and hopped off the beat up old chair she was sitting on, grabbed a cookie from the cookie jar, and ran into the living room. Her mom was practically passed out on the couch, half leaning on it for support. The hangover from yesterday's buzz was too strong for her. Evil, almost demonic cackles sounded from under the couch her mom was laying on. Her mom cringed and Vicki hid a smug smirk.
"Rosie~" Vicki crooned softly, slowly creeping towards the edge of the couch. "I have a treat for you~" She sang, waving the cookie under the couch before quickly snatching it back. Vicki didn't want to get bitten today.
"Da bank a Wosie currently doesn't 'ccept such little bribes. Come back wen you got mowe to offer!" Vicki's lips twitched, and she sighed before trying a different tactic. She slid the cookie under the couch. Once she was sure she heard crunching, Vicki crouched down and looked under the couch. Her sister's ash brown hair was messy and unkempt, sticking up at odd angles. She was squished between the couch and the floor, but she didn't look uncomfortable. No, she had hid here many times, shouting out insults from where no one could reach her.
Quickly, Vicki bit the inside of her cheek until she could taste the rust of her own blood. Tears sprang to her eyes and she silently wept in pain. Vicki wasn't uncomfortable with the pain for she had done this many times. She was used to it, whether physical or emotional, she was used to it.
"Rosie," Vicki croaked, successfully earning her baby sister's attention. "T-that's the last cookie we had. I already gave the other one to Matt. If you come out and get dressed, I'll get you more. I-I promise. I'm sorry. I know you don't like pink, but..." Vicki trailed off, sniffling. Rosie's green eyes narrowed at Vicki's, before she sighed and waved her hand for Vicki to move.
"You're getting too gud at tat. Stop spending so much time with Ewena!" A fond smile twitched on 8 year old Vicki's lips. Sometimes she couldn't help but wonder if her baby sister knew more than she let on. But she instantly let that thought slide away. After all, Rosie was 3. If anyone knew more than anyone in this house, it was her. She was the one who took care of everyone, even their mother. Although, she didn't have any other choice in that matter.
"Hey!" Matt screeched over a mouthful of cheerios, miffed on Elena's behalf. Rosie and Vicki instantly burst out laughing and Kelly scowled, throwing the dress at Vicki.
"You dress her. I need a drink." Kelly muttered, stumbling over to the kitchen to grab a beer. Vicki flinched, her hand half reaching out to her mother, half hanging in the space between. Rosie frowned, anger boiling her blood and she curled her small hands into fists. She lunged forward, ready to start the temper tantrum of the century, but an arm held her back. Vicki's arms shot out to hold her little sister back, her eyes pleading, begging her to just put on the dress. Rosie sighed, petulant, but raised her arms to be dressed anyway. I'll just throw all of her and Pete's alcohol down the toilet later, Rosie snuffed.
Rosie's Dress
After sliding the dress on her, Vicki went to get Rosie her knee high, white lacey socks and her light pink mary janes. Rosie tensed, but allowed Vicki to dress her. I am a thirty year old bad ass, and yet I'm wearing a tutu. Rosie rolled her eyes, knowing that she had to act like a baby for the time being. How boring, she thought. At least, she inwardly chuckled when Kelly banged her head on the refrigerator door, I get to make this bitch's life miserable.
"Aw, how cute." Vicki teased after settling a pink and white head band on Rosie's head. Rosie glared but without any real heat. The second she met her new sister, Vicki had reminded Rosie of herself, when she was young. Except she didn't have anyone she needed to take care of. Rosie was always looking out for herself, no one else.
Well, then she got best friends, but it wasn't the same. Vicki Donovan had to practically raise her and Matt by the age of 8; it didn't start when Kelly left. Kelly had long since abandoned her kids, even though she was still physically there. Matt was none the wiser, but Vicki knew. And so did Rosie. And Rosie couldn't blame Vicki for turning to drugs when she was older, but she sure as hell could try to stop it.
"C'mon. Let's get you some breakfast." Vicki picked up the now dressed Rosie and took her to the kitchen where Matt was eating. She fixed her a small bowl of cereal, only adding sugar when Rosie's whinning got too loud for Kelly to stand. Vicki then went to fix her own breakfast, only to be interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Miranda." Kelly smiled excitedly before setting her beer down and rinsing her mouth real quick. She had just popped a piece of gum before opening the door to utter disappointment. "Rosie." Kelly called out, trying to make her voice sound as soft as she could. Kelly fussed with her hair, hoping to make herself look at least a quarter as presentable as Carol Lockwood did. It obviously didn't work.
"This is why you put your clothes in the morning." Vicki scolded her sister and Matt giggled. "Now you don't have time to eat your breakfast. Here." Vicki grabbed a brown spotted banana from the kitchen counter. "Eat this real quick."
Rosie had wrinkled her nose in disgust when she felt it. A tenative brush against her mind. Rosie's eyes fluttered slightly, unnoticed by Vicki, a question was being asked. The image of a yogurt cup flashed before Rosie's eyes. Rosie hummed quietly: an answer. Suddenly Rosie grinned up at Vicki, her eyes crinkling as she firmly said, "I won't need it," before holding her arms up.
Vicki sighed, helping Rosie down off of her high chair and letting her run to the living room to get her things. Rosie picked up her book bag and the lunch Vicki made her this morning before sprinting on ahead. Vicki turned around, sprinting back to the living room to get her sister's diaper bag, even though Rosie insisted she was completely potty trained. After grabbing the diaper bag, Vicki walked over to Carol's expensive looking SUV to put it in the car. Rosie had already buckled herself into her car seat and was excitedly chattering with her friends. She paused once to give Vicki a bright smile and a wave. Vicki smiled, fondness hitting her as she smiled back at her sister. Just another Wednesday, Vicki thought.
