Mom pulled out two plates and opened the freezer.

"Chicken fingers or pizza bagels?" She asked me.

"Pizza bagels," I replied, staring down at the table.

"Pizza bagels it is!" Exclaimed my mom. Winking, she added, "That's what I wanted, too."

My smile faded a little as she said that. "Um... that's good!" I replied hurridly, not wanting to make mom upset, now that she was happy again.

For a second, mom glanced at me, suspition gleaming in her ice blue eyes. I shuffled my feet, and my eyes darted towards her for a split second, then continued to keep focused on the table below me. Mom shook it off, and popped the pizza bagels into the oven.

She sat down with me, and the silence persisited.

"You want to talk?" She asked me, her words laced with stress.

I knew why. Mom was worried that  I would suffer too much. She was afraid I would make a mistake, and end up more upset then I already am. She felt she had pushed Daddy away, when she hadn't. Bu then I started to worry. What if daddy got cusody of Nathan, or

"I'm fine." I told her. "I will not suffer majorly. Daddy left on his own. It's not your fault. Nathan, and will be fine. You said so yourself. It doesn't matter. I won't break down in class, and I won't act different around my..." friends was supposed to come next. But I coulDn't say it. I shivered, not of cold but fear.

Mom moved her chair over, and put my head in her lap. "Hush... Don't worry, don't be afraid," She whispered to me.

But I did worry.

Now I was afraid of what my mind could do to me.
