We flowed over the practice mat with precision as I took a swing out, catching air and bending nearly to the ground to avoid a kick to the head. Finishing the move with a high kicked back flip, I felt my foot connect with a part of my sparring mate’s body. When I righted myself on my feet, crouched in an fight-ready position, I assessed the man before me.

He had nearly a hundred pounds on me, all of it muscle and his clothes stretched extremely tight around him. When he checked to see blood under his nose, he sniffed loudly and zeroed in on me. I watched as he charged me, ready for my final move.

When he got close enough, I shifted my weight to my left foot and dragged my body to the side. I knocked his feet out from under him, making him fall to the mat face first. In a flash, I straddled his back and grabbed two fist fulls of his hair. Slam. His face bounced off the mat as I slammed it full force. Slam. Blood gushed from his face and I stared blankly at it as I raised his head again.

“Rex, stop!” I slammed his face one last time before letting go roughly and moving to stand to my feet. The man at my feet didn’t move.

“Jesus, she’s a monster.” Turning my head, I cocked it to the side to look at the unfamiliar man talking to Allen.

I walked slowly to the edge of the mat, not breaking eye contact with the stranger. He shifted on his feet, pulling at the collar of his dress shirt at the same time as he looked away from me.

“She’s my monster, aren’t you baby?” When Allen reached out to grab ahold of me as I hopped down from the mat, I ripped my arm from him and slapped him across the face.

The other man stood there, stunned, while I stared at him with no emotion. Allen reached up to touch his cheek and almost made a move to retaliate. When he looked at me, he stopped and slowly relaxed, laughing lightly.

“Almost forgot how feisty you are.” Allen retorted, glancing at his friend.

“She’s a beauty though, ain’t she?” His friend made no move to agree, didn’t even nod or shake his head.

“Get yourself cleaned up, I’ll be back in half an hour.” Allen threw his arm around his friend’s shoulder and started walking away, towards the gym exit. He guided the scared man from the building and as soon as the door slammed shut, I headed to the back room.

The ancient gym had a locker room, with a shower room, an office and a small equipment closet that they transformed into my ‘room’. A pillow and blanket lay folded in the far right corner while my small pile of clothes lay in the opposite. I walked into the small space just to grab my issued towel and shut the door.

As I walked to the shower room, I walked past one of the floor-to-ceiling mirrors, catching my reflection. Stormy grey eyes looked back at me as I took a few steps forward, standing toe-to-toe with the reflection. My hair was in a tight bun on the top of my head, keeping the long brown mane out of my face. Looking down my body, my white raggedy tank top had blood spots all over it, along with my blue shorts and pale bare legs.

Looking back up my face, I tried to force myself to feel. To feel anything. Remorse for nearly beating a man to death. Fear of losing my life doing what I was doing. My eyes stayed blank and my face the same. Finally, something bubbled up in me, the only emotion I could ever feel anymore. Letting out a shrill yell, I pulled back my fist back and threw it into my reflection, hoping to feel the punch through the glass.
