I trudged through the barren city hoping to find a safe place to rest. I clutched the baseball bat I had recently acquired, so hard, that my knuckles turned white. Something wasn't right here, I could just feel it in the air. I could hear the shuffling of feet coming from the main road and immediately tensed. Listening to the steps more closely, I realized that the steps were too disjointed to be human.
I took in a deep breath.
Every little thing had me on edge, and I hated the feeling but I suppose that's why I'm still alive now. I ventured further into the alley way hitting the infected with my bat, ending their poor state of existence. I looked around the alley, looking for a certain sign to show me where to go and sure enough, right on the chipped brick wall was the familiar and relieving logo of a safe room. The alleyway led me to a larger road which was oddly empty except for a few stumbling infected, but was soon filled with bright rays from flashlights, flickering wildly throughout the street. Getting as close as I could to the wall, I ducked down so I would be out of sight. In this world people were just as dangerous as the zombies. The group of people soon gathered in the middle of the street across from the alleyway I was using as cover, and it didn't seem like they would be leaving soon. I needed to get going, staying here any longer would be dangerous. I glanced around and saw an old rusty blue news stand and quite a ways from that was an old white car. I could use those as cover to get to a safer place and closer to the safe room. Holding my bat close to my body I made a quick dash to the empty news stand, getting there with no difficulty. Turning my attention to the people, they were still in the middle of the street, seeming to be having an argument about something, but that wasn't my problem nor did I need to focus on that, I needed to focus on getting out of here. I saw that there were no zombies lingering around the car, the coast was clear, the people were distracted by their own problems, this was it. I made a sprint towards the car. I was halfway there when I hit a soda can with my foot, launching it in front of me somewhere, and that's when I felt a sharp cold pain emit from my shoulder which caused me to stumble to the side. I clutched my left shoulder to try to stop bleeding as my thoughts scattered in every direction.  When I looked up I was met with a fist connecting with my jaw and a hand grabbing me by the front of the shirt.
"Are you infected?" I heard a low voice ask me as I tried to clear my fuzzy vision.
"I said, are you infected?" The same voice asked, or more yelled, as I was thrown to the ground.
"No." I croaked out trying to get to my feet but felt a gun against my head that froze me in my tracks. "I said I'm not infected."
"Well I can't say I believe you man, you look like shit and you seem to have some stuff on you that we could use." Another voice,  seeming to be female, spoke as the gun was pressed farther into the side of my head. I needed a way out, I needed to think. My thoughts were interrupted by a loud screech and a loud thud.
"Shit, special infected!" I heard someone yell and the gun was removed from my head. This was my chance. I took off running in my previous destination. I looked back to see a single hunter had demolished their entire group and was staring at me. This caused my adrenaline to quicken as I moved faster and faster until I ran into a red metal door. I quickly opened the door and slammed it closed and locked it tight. I sat my stuff down and sat down to collect my thoughts. At least I was safe.
