'School. You either love it, or you hate it. There's no in between. Especially at my school, which is Hell. But no one believes me, and no one believes my friends. I mean, who would trust a bunch of middle schoolers like us? But, I digress.
Hi, my name is Shane. This is how I try to survive in the WORST middle school imaginable.'
I sighed as I got off the school bus. I was trying to write an autobiography, but it wasn't going so well. As I reached the school building, I ran towards the back of a familiar head. Charlie! I tried to push past a group of people, but I lost my friend in the crowd. Damn it... as the bell rang, I hung my head low and sat at the back of the classroom. I was soon scowling at a short kid named Joan, he was known for stealing stuff. Mostly pencils, but also the locks on lockers or other people's food. He was a bit of a kleptomaniac, and was pretty ruthless. He said that all humans could 'burn in Hell, for all I care' (his words, not mine). No one liked him very much either. So we had an agreement. An alliance, of sorts. You could almost call us friends.
The bell rang once more, and homeroom passed in a blur. The start of the day always felt like that, never anything too important. Every kid in the school building was waiting for one thing only: the lunch bell. It took forever as our classes watched the red hand reach the twelve all too slowly. Everyone sat at the edge of their seats, the teachers scolding us for putting our books away early. No one listened to the teachers as they scolded, the promise of food, friends and a small amount of escape from class making us all too eager to ignore the stern tone.
Ding!
Finally, the bell rang. A dash to my locker later, and I was in the cafeteria. I grinned at Charlie and Emily as I took my rightful place at the table, across from Mira and Chloe. As the normal banter of trying to steal each other's food turned to violence and our small table got yelled at like every other day, the conversation changed. The voices low, a nervous mumble unable to be heard through the cafeteria's complete chaos. I could hear Emily muttering worriedly to Charlie. Our table exchanged glances as a thought hit me like a brick
It was the day of a big test. One of those tests that we take every year, the kind that make all the kids moan as we're pulled from our normal classes into something different. Our day seemed to stretch twice as long on test days. No fun, only work, only boring silence and sitting around and hoping that you won't end up failing. I mentally sighed, cursing my procrastination from the night before. I forgot to prepare myself, I was going to fail. I already knew it, I was going to fail. Charlie glanced at me and shook his head with a sigh, yelling at me from across the table.
"You should've prepared yourself!"
"I know, shut up!"
I slammed my head onto the table loud enough for the talking to go silent for a moment. The noise quickly phased back into existence, as if it never stopped. I couldn't suppress a shudder, and Charlie sighed again, calling me an idiot under his breath. I was ready to pounce at him at this point, barely keeping myself in check. The teachers didn't like fighting. At our school, that kind of stuff was always getting out of hand. Luckily enough, before anything too terrible could happen, the bell rang. Time for the testing to begin... the normal pushing and prodding of everyone trying to rush to class had been dulled by the prospect of tests.
I sat down at my next class, prepared to fail. But... the teacher never arrived. Emily and I stole a glance at each other from a few seats away in slight alarm. Our teacher was never late, always yelling at students who were unlucky enough to have been caught outside our classrooms. The automatic door closed with a shudder and a clang, the class deadly quiet as a mechanical lock clicked into place. The bell signaling an announcement chimed once, twice, three times.
"Attention all students, please stay in your seats at this time. I repeat, please stay in your seats at this time. The doors have been closed for your safety, as there is a supernatural being on the loose in the hallways. Please do not attempt to open the doors or get out of your seats, doing so may lead to injuries or death."
That... didn't sound very good. The class stayed quiet, a slight murmur of conversation humming in the background. I looked back at Emily, mouthing an 'oh no'. Emily responded with a slight nod, writing notes on a sheet of paper. The paper appeared in front of me with the words 'what now?' written on it. I jotted down an 'idk' and crumpled the page into a ball, throwing it back at Emily. I wish I had a power like Emily or Charlie. They could use their powers and never get caught. They used their powers, and no one even cared. Charlie could read minds, which was the most annoying thing ever, and Emily could use some sort of teleportation. While my friends had these awesome powers, I couldn't even use mine on command. I didn't even know why I got into this school, everyone here was so much better than I was. Even the kids here hated me for my powers. It wasn't fair. Since when was it fair?
There was a loud bang outside, and a voice that sounded important. The voice, loud enough to seep through the walls and make everyone sit up straight, was unintelligible. As far as I could tell, it was someone who ran the tests. Another paper appeared in front of me, this one saying 'what do you think happened this time?' I rolled my eyes at the question. Another test failure... like I'll be, soon enough. I shot a glare at Emily and looked down with a frown as the door unlocked with a click. Our teacher walked in, her suit only slightly wrinkled after the struggle. I better not mess this test up, not like whoever that was.
