The birds had gradually chirped louder and louder. Brendon couldn't take the noise any longer so he got out of bed. Thank God, it's Saturday, Brendon thought. He was dreading waking up because he knew sometime today his Mom was going to announce the news she had been hiding from him. He felt distressed and uneasy.
With his arms folded and his pace unsteady he decided to roam around the kitchen. When he had got to the kitchen he saw a miniature post-it note laying on the granite countertop. The note read "Be back in a few minutes, Love you!". Brendon chuckled and noticed a few small cardboard boxes on the living room carpet. He assumed it was one of his siblings' old belongings that they were getting rid of. He didn't think much of it and proceeded going back to his room.
He was bored to death and was still anxious from last night. ring-ring-ring! It was Spencer. Brendon answered his phone seeing as he had nothing to do today anyway.
"Hey B! Wanna go for a walk down on Fremont? I've been dying to go for a nice walk lately. Speaking of yesterday", he said going off topic momentarily. "Why were you in Mrs. O'Riley's office again? Are they putting you back on your meds. Dude! You can't go back on those again. You'll-", Spencer shouted and got cut off by Brendon.
"Spence! I'm fine. I'm not going back on my meds. I'll be okay. I'll meet you on Fremont at twelve?", Brendon answered, half frustrated; half happy.
Brendon through on some clothes from the day before and proceeded out the door. He thought maybe this could help get his mind on the topic of something other then the news his Mom would get to tell him. Then suddenly, one of those things happened to him again.
Random lyrics being spun around his head like a merry go round. "It's these substandard motels, on the corner of 4th and Fremont Street". The melody felt so natural. He had almost felt the song. But he didn't know this song. It came to him at the most unplanned times. What does this mean? He said to himself hundreds of times repeatedly.
Finally, he left his room, still confused and headed out the door to meet Spencer. He didn't have a long distance to walk but felt the atmosphere change once he hit Fremont Street. It felt fake, as if everyone here acted happy but was probably either drunk or going mad. Then as he saw the lights he turned to see Spencer and gave him a little nod to know he was there.
Behind Spencer was an enormous crowd of people. Not just the wanderers and tourists you'd likely see. But it was Brendon's own family. Brendon glanced at them, sweating in confusion. Before he could manage to get out a word, he turned and was facing his Mom, looking directly into her eyes.
"Brendon. You're probably confused on what's going on right now but we asked Spencer to be here to make today special for you", his Mom told him with tears forming in her eyes.
"Why are you making today special? What the hell is going on today?", he replied in confusion.
"Your father and I decided that it's best to get out of this place. Not just our house, but Vegas in general. What good has it done for us? We've lost our jobs, the school system is horrendous, all your relatives have left the state, or even the country. It's time we have a fresh start. But we thought that today you should have fun with Spencer. You'll see each other again very soon but today will be the last for a while, so please make the most of it baby. We love you", she said, now crying.
"Wait. Hold on. We're moving? Where are we going to live? You've lost your jobs? This must be a stupid dream", Brendon said baffled as he remembered the boxes in the living room.
"We're sorry. We just want the best for you and your brothers and sisters", Brendon's Dad said quietly.
Spencer was trying real hard not to cry but Brendon saw his face turn pale and his hands turn shaky.
"I love you B. Thank you for always being there for me when I need you. You'll always be my best friend until the day I die. We can stay connected and we won't lose touch. We can even visit on holidays!", Spencer told him reassuring that they won't lose touch.
"I love you too Spence. But Mom, where are we moving? Seriously, I'm confused", Brendon said being quite blunt, even though he knew deep down he felt heartbroken.
"We're moving to L.A. We've already found a house. It's a duplex. The school is very fine and it seems like you'd fit in perfectly", his Mom said with a smile.
Brendon's mind flipped. He'd never been to Los Angeles before, but he didn't want to leave Spencer and his home. Even though he hated his school, it was the only one he knew. He didn't know how to comprehend everything. The stress he had been dealing with for the past two days were too much for him to handle alone.
"Okay. Let's make today worth it", Brendon said, looking at his best friend and feeling like the spirit of his childhood took over and made him feel a sliver of happiness.
The Urie family and Spencer strolled upon old buildings and shops. The memories went from being once faded, to being so memorable that they were like brand new. Epiphanies formed. Brendon felt the lyrics rush through his veins and make its way to his mind. "The Vegas lights, the lies and affectations". Brendon felt a shock of confusion again. Was he making this all up? Was this supposed to mean something? He felt betrayed by his own mind, almost like he did on his medication.
As the whole family was reenacting memories they had in the same locations they were made in, Brendon had a small thought in the back of his brain that maybe the lyric meant something. He started to believe that someone here was lying to him. Maybe not about moving, but about something else. Trust perhaps. The lies and affectations.
Brendon and Spencer said their goodbyes as Spencer walked home alone. It was dark out now because of how long his family had spent walking and talking about "the good old days in Vegas". Brendon was afraid of the dark. Not necessarily the fact that he couldn't see, but the fact that maybe people could somehow see him.
Spencer was alone and Brendon felt bad for him because he didn't want him to walk home alone. It wasn't safe because Spencer was only sixteen. Anything could've happened. Brendon got into the car and watched the newly formed rain clouds out the car window. The rain fell fast and Brendon noticed Spencer jogging, to get away from the rain. As the car was put into reverse, Brendon dazed out the window again, but this time Spencer was no where to be seen.
