"He tried so hard to clean it up, but halfway through his hand short circuited," Karen explained between hiccups of laughter. "One spark was so large it caught the tablecloth on fire!"
I pictured the two enjoying lighthearted conversation. Victor was charming and handy, but I could certainly see him as incredibly clumsy from time to time. I could imagine the face of the waiter and nearby customers freaking out while he tried to put out the fire.
"Are you serious!?" Garfield exclaimed. "Dude, that's hilarious!"
He hugged his abdomen as he laughed until tears trickled down his cheeks. I chuckled despite myself.
"Yea, yea," Victor smiled, "laugh it up."
Garfield finally started to ease up on the laughter when the hair on the nape of my neck stood on end. The weight of the judgemental stare observing me and my friends was so familiar I didn't even need to turn around to know what was coming.
"Look what the cat dragged in," a thin voice called behind us.
"And it looks like they're in our spot," a silvery tone chimed in.
Jinx and Kitten circled around the table. It was eerie how they appeared to be the inverted versions of one another. One was uppity while the other remained unbothered the majority of the time. Somehow, they seemed to be so in sync with each other when it came to ruining people's days.
"Really?" Karen exasperated, "Who do you two think you are?"
"I'm glad you asked," Kitten purred. She pulled out a lavish pink cell phone and dialed a number.
She paused before pressing the dial button.
"I don't think Daddy will take too nicely towards a group of teenagers creating havoc around his mall," she threatened.
"Havoc?" Garfield's face twisted in confusion.
"His mall?" Victor added.
"Kitten's father is the owner of Killer Industries." Jinx spoke pointedly as if expecting that to mean something to us. "I can tell by the dumb looks on your faces that none of you know what that is."
"And none of us care either," Karen smiled as she waved her hand dismissively towards the pair.
Karen shot me a look that said, 'Can you believe these two?'. I rolled my eyes in agreement. I knew there was a reason I liked her right away.
A flash of blonde emerged behind the two girls. The two henchmen parted ways for Terra to step forward. She flashed a vibrant smile at Garfield. Her lips grazed the tip of her straw suggestively before she addressed her bit-I mean, her friends.
"Come on, girls. I'm sure if we ask nicely they'll move."
"Then we'll politely decline," I seethed.
"Then you'll be kindly escorted out of the mall," Kitten threatened. A couple of mall cops cleared their throats to make their presence known.
Garfield inquired, "What's so special about this spot anyway?"
"This is the spot where we first met," Terra responded immediately. "We've been eating here since sophomore year, so you can imagine what a big deal it is to keep up the tradition."
"Something smells like bullshit," Karen sassed.
"It's not a lie," Terra insisted. "Look, our initials are even carved here."
We followed her pointed finger to the side of the table. Surprisingly, there it was. Deeply ingrained into the wood was a cheesy heart with "TKJ=BFFs". I almost gagged.
