"That's him," Edith whispered to her younger sister.
Dorothy looked up and was instantly entranced by the flaming copper haired man, Mr. Donovan. Edith had told her all about him, and how he and her husband had been friends since they were boys. He was handsome, wealthy and yet still unmarried. Her sister had married the year before, leaving her as the only unmarried daughter in her family.
The countryside that they had grown up in, though beautiful, had suddenly run out of men; and so she had to move to the city with her sister Edith and her new groom in the hopes of finding a husband of her own. The city had far more bachelors, all of whom were looking for a young bride, but still Dorothy was unable to get one to fall in love with her.
Mr. Donovan had been hand picked by her sister for her. Many a letter had flown between Edith and their parents, and their father had as well as given his blessing for the marriage before Dorothy had even met the man. Tonight would be their first meeting, and if all went to plan, by the end of the week he would be asking for her hand.
All heads turned Mr. Donovan walked into the room. The light tickled off his cheeks, and shone through his glorious hair. He turned to face them allowing Dorothy to get a glimpse of his strong profile against his soft white skin. Blood rushes to her cheeks causing her face to match the shade of red as his hair. "He is quite handsome," she whispered to her sister.
"I think he's coming to dance with you," Edith replied.
Dorothy knew she should not fiddle, but her hands instinctively went to her hair to make sure everything was where it was meant to be.
"Could you find a more unfortunate time to do that?" Edith asked.
"Edith!" A strong and deep voice called to her sister.
"Mr. Donovan!" Edith exclaimed, "This is my sister I was telling you of."
"Dorothy," the name trickled out like honey.
"Good evening," she curtsied.
"Good evening," he bowed. His enchanting green eyes held hers like they would never let go.
"Would you care to dance?" he asked as his cheeks flushed, "With me?"
Her own cheeks reddened at his shyness. "Of course."
The corners of his lips pulled up into a brief smile, before composing himself and offered his arm and led her across the room.
She knew that she knew all the steps, but she couldn't help but fall over her own feet. There was something about this man that made her lose all her usual grace. With any other man she would feel ashamed of her clumsiness, but the way he was tripping and laughing made it all the more wonderful.
The longer they danced, the more she realized how lovely he was. She was mistaken about his eyes though. They weren't just green, as she had originally thought, on closer inspection she could see that they were sprinkled with gold flakes deep within. It was like he had been blessed by the angels as they changed the sky from blue to red. He was exquisite, and she couldn't look away.
When the time came for the dance to end, her face was stretched into a smile so broad she thought it would never leave. It may have only been one dance, but she knew that she was already in love. They reluctantly returned to where her sister was waiting.
"Miss Clarkson, would you be interested in taking a walk through the gardens with me?" He asked with a voice as melodic as the music that was causing into the background.
"I would love to," she smiled. "May I?" she asked her sister. She would need to accompany them so as to maintain her sisters dignity.
"I'll join you," her sister smiled."I think a walk would do us all some good."
Dorothy took his arm once more, and he guided her outside to the fresh evening air. The wind hit her chest like a shard of glass, but he did not hear her gasp over the sound of the babbling fountain.
"I would like to apologize for my atrocious dancing," he laughed.
"And I would like to apologize for mine," she giggled in reciprocation. She looked back at her sister, who had fallen several steps behind them. She was now distracted by a friend, they were clucking like a pair of hens causing her to forget about the young couple now in front of them. She'd never been alone with a man, but somehow that didn't worry her. With Mr. Donovan she felt safe. She could tell that he was not the sort of man who would ever take advantage of a young lady.
Dorothy and Mr. Donovan laughed together. Not the sort of laugh that was at anything in particular, but they simply laughed because they were already laughing, and couldn't find it in them to stop. Time felt heavy, and like the night would never end. Crickets chirped around them, and a fountain babbled away happily, but all that could be heard was the sound of the two young people, happy to be in each other's company.
Mr. Donovan looked back to Edith, she was far too preoccupied by her friend to pay them any notice. Then, he did something he never thought he would have done. He brushed a stray curl away from her face, and then leaned down, ever so gently, and planted a single kiss on her mouth.
Her lips tingled. The taste seemed to linger, like a forbidden fruit.
