Chapter One
What the hell are you on about, Jules? Whos David am i then? Please tell me because right now i dont really know what to do with . . . ! He trails off not quite looking her in the face. He seems angry, like hes been caught in a trap. Running his hands through his gelled back hair over and over, something her David would never do no matter how stressed he might be. Her David would also never have spoken to her this way. He was the most understanding and compassionate man she had ever known. He had always been so thoughtful once he wore down her defences and convinced her to give him a chance. She never had to worry about telling him anything because he always understood and supported her until whatever problem she had were resolved. It hurt to hear him be so cold with her.
Now he looks at her, staring coldly at her damp face as he adjusts his expensive blue suit. She eyes him cautiously even more convinced that he is not her David. Realising that even the suit was wrong . . . David was a stickler for being well dressed. This particular suit was never in rotation because it was the suit he had worn on their wedding day. He had gotten it cleaned recently in time to renew their vows next week. He would never wear it on any old day and he certainly would not have worn it ever with a striped green tie. Not just a changed man but a completely different person in personality and body. Its close though, she thinks, if this had been a normal morning i never would have noticed the tiny differences. I would have gotten the kids up and barely noticed David before he left for work. The way he stands favouring his left leg, the way his arms lay across his too broad chest. This is not my David!
Dont call me that! Only David calls me that! She screams angrily wishing more than anything that she had the power to hurt him. Standing at just over six feet tall even this David is clearly addicted to the gym. There is no way she can take him.
July not being the weak kind is still tiny at around five foot four and an extreme light weight compared to David. Even with all the self defence classes she had taken throughout her life she had never been able to get him on the ground. It was a running joke and a deal they had. On the day that she could take him down he would reward her with a pair of boxing gloves and a training session at his gym. July hated boxing and she hated his gym so the deal always pushed her to try harder to take him down for making fun of her. During their twelve years of marriage she had never once accomplished it, but she would keep trying.
Oh, Jules, Jules, Jules . . . You are acting crazy, love. What is going on with you today? Chill out, take a breath and we can sort this out once you stop acting like a nut job. Imposter David sneers edging his way closer and closer to her. His shiny black shoes sliding silently across the carpet. July can see his hands balling into fists as his entire body is tensing up.
Chill out? Who are you, Scooby fucking doo? I told you dont call me Jules and tell me WHERE THE HELL MY KIDS ARE! She screams in rage staring him down. She feels power building inside her and is momentarily distracted in wondering what it is. Not noticing his body tensing all over, ready for a fight she stands her ground and screams at him WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH MY KIDS?
He takes a step toward her clearly trying to calm her down in his obvious anger. July steps away again raising her hands signalling him not to come any closer. He seems to consider for a second before a cruel smile spreads across his face and he lunges at her. July yelps in surprise, losing sight of the power she felt moments ago, and stepping back again shoves her arms out to block him but he just barrels through them knocking her to the floor and bounces her head on the edge of the metal desk. Dazed and struggling to see through double vision July pulls her knees up to her chest cowering against the wall and just as he bends to grab her she tenses and thrusts her feet at his chest as hard as she can. Expecting it to be difficult she is shocked when she feels no weight resisting her at all. It honestly felt like this huge man weighed next to nothing. Her feet hit the floor hard sending a shock wave up through her shins as she stares.
