Nick groaned and hid his face in his hands. There's no way it would happen.

"Man, just ask her," Daryl prompted. "After all that magic shit we went through, this should be the least stressful thing you could do."

"Yeah, you'd think so," retorted Nick, lifting his face to look at his partner. "Except she's human, Ward. I don't think the stigma around orcs changed after one night."

Daryl stared into the distance, considering Nick's words. "Good point." Nick groaned and Ward continued to encourage him. "Still, though. (Y/N)'s been nice to you since she started. Remembering and bringing your favorite coffee order every day? Giving you half her lunch when your dumbass forgets yours? You don't think that maaaybe she could be into you too?"

Nick pondered his words. It would make some sense why (Y/N) would be so sweet towards him, but what if that's just reading too far into it? What if you're just nice like that?

Ward elbowed his partner in the ribs. "Heads up, eleven o'clock."

Nick's heart races when he sees you strutting towards him. The natural sway of your hips and your bright cherry smile successfully scrambling his brain before she even made it to his desk. God, you were beautiful. Way too beautiful for him... Nick's heart dropped as he began to doubt himself again.

"Morning, gentlemen," you greeted as you stopped at the desk. You held up a cup holder tray with two freshly brewed coffees. "Get it while it's hot." You handed Ward and Jakoby the warm cups, your heart leaping just a bit when Nick's fingers gently brushed hers.

"Well thank you, (Y/N)," Daryl said. "You know, we were actually just gossiping about you." Nick started to panic.

You smiled and cocked an eyebrow. "Oh, really? Painting each other's nails and braiding your hair too?" you teased.

"Ha ha ha, so hilarious." Ward stood from his desk and pointed to Nick. "He'll fill you in. I gotta call my wife."

"She's still having you check in every couple hours?" you asked. Ward shrugged and headed toward the door. You turned your attention to the orc still sitting at the desk. Butterflies filled your stomach. You and Nick never really had too much time to talk aside from your little exchanges when you'd bring him coffee or lunch, so you planned on investing yourself one hundred percent into this moment. You planted herself in the seat Ward left and scooted closer to Nick. "So what's the gossip, big guy? Did I do something crazy?"

Nick's voice caught in his throat as you leaned closer to him. Just the scent of you was enough to make him want to smash his lips to yours. Instead he just cleared his throat. "N-No, nothing crazy. All good things."

"Oh? Like what?" You scooted even closer, your thighs touching. Even through the fabric, your warmth sent a rush through his body, igniting a small spark of courage. Nick used it before it faded.

"Just stuff. I'd be happy to tell you... over lunch?" Oh, shit. Shit, shit, shit, he thought. Regret instantly washed over him. There's no way you'd-

"I'd love to," you accepted, interrupting Nick's thoughts. Your heart soared and excited jitters ran through your body, but you kept your composure. "My break is at one. Come by my desk then and we'll head out?"

Nick stared, dumbfounded. Did you really just accept a date proposal from him? Did you say yes to a date with him? He couldn't believe it, as real as it was. His whole body burned with a new fire. One of accomplishment. Of rising self esteem. His worst fear of rejection and losing one of the few people who showed him kindness vanished. There was so much racing through his mind, so much he wanted to confess to you, but all he could manage was a simple "Sounds great."

Your smile grew and you stood from your seat. "Awesome. See you then." You leaned down to place a soft kiss on Jakoby's cheek. You rushed back to your desk so he couldn't see the blush creeping up your neck to your face and the dopey smile you wore.

Nick watch as you scurried off, his cheek tingling where you had kissed him. His mind was complete mush.

Ward snapped Nick from his trance when he sat back in his seat, side-eyeing his partner with a knowing grin. "What?" Nick asked.

"What'd I tell you?" Daryl nudged him with his elbow.

Nick scoffed at his partner, but still grateful to him for his encouragement. "Exactly what I needed to hear."
