Started At The Bookstore

Chapter 2

It was finally the weekend! It was the first day of work for me at the bookstore, working at the bookstore during weekends is probably the only thing I look forward to. Books are my escape from reality, whenever I read books; I am lost in my own world. Without books, I wouldn't know what to do. I am so happy that I got this job at the bookstore! 

Let's take it back to my first week at my new school. It was awful!I still haven't made any friends and I keep getting lost on the way to class. But I did learn more about Aaron, sitting beside him during English really doesn't make me like him. Yeah he's got such a beautiful face, but he seems like a huge jerk. All I hear him and his friend talk about is girls and he's so conceited too. Why did I have to move? Not like my other school was any better, but at least I knew people and I wasn't much of a loner. I really do hope that school gets better for me!

I come down the stairs for breakfast; I smell the amazing scent of pancakes and bacon, I'm hungry! I go get myself some breakfast and scarf the whole thing down. My mom gives me a weird look and I just shrug my shoulders and leave for work. Walking to work was quite peaceful, though it was cold; it was lovely seeing the colourful leaves twirling around due to the windy. I love fall! 

As I expected, I got to work early. 

"Wow, you're quite early!" says the manager, Maria

"Uh yeah, It's my first day; I wouldn't want to be late." I say to her as she directs me to the employees lounge; where I put my things in my locker. 

Maria tells me everything I must do before we open up. So here I am putting books into bookshelves, it might seem boring; but hell no! This is fun, I love arranging books. I treat all books with care! Once I'm finished doing that, I go around the store to see if everything is fine. I think I went around the store like five times. 

I look at the clock and it's 8am, I guess that means it's time to open up the store. I highly doubt that the store will be busy, it's not some big fancy bookstore you see in like New York City; but it's decent. It's a store with books, that's all that matters! 

As I expected, it's not busy at all. In the morning there were probably about 5 customers that came into the store. It's so quite, I'm really not use to this; but i'm not complaining. It's a paying job and I'm surrounded by books, what more could I ask for! But I really do hope that the afternoon becomes way more busier than the morning. 

On my lunch break, I go out to by myself food. As I walk around town looking for a good place to buy food, I see Aaron and his idiotic friends. They're just hanging out at the park being stupid, as usual. I just realized that I have to pass by them in order to get back to work on time. Dammit  why did I have to take such a long time to get lunch! 

Realizing that they probably don't even know who I am, I just walk with my head down and pass them. Thankfully they don't even recognize me, but when I look back; I see Aaron staring at me. His stare was intensesive, it made me feel weak. I see him starting to walk towards me and I panick. All I do is get my act together and rush back to work. I start to run and behind me I hear "HEY!" It sounds like Aaron, all I tell myself is "don't look back Kassidy, dont!" 

As I approach the store, I am out of breath! I look at the time and I made it one minute before my break ends. I try to forget everything that just happened, it was quite weird! Aaron doesn't even talking or smile at me at school, I even sit beside him in English class and nothing happens, how weird! 

The afternoon was a lot busier than the morning, thank goodness! I really like this job, it's great how some customers ask me what books are good to read; we do end up having a huge discussion! The store being busy took my mind off of the things that happened earlier. I was actually having a really good afternoon, until I was in the back of the store helping a customer and I see Aaron walk through the front door. 

"WHAT IN THE WORLD IS HE DOING HERE" I think to myself. I see Aaron looking around the store, is he looking for me? How does he know I work here? I try to distance myself from him, so i'm pretty much avoiding him!  I stay near the back of the store organizing books, i'm pretty sure I've organized the back section of the bookstore about 50 times. I take a peek to see the front of the bookstore and I don't see Aaron. Maybe he left! I'm relieved, so I make my way back to the front. As I walk to the front, someone from behind taps my shoulder; you wouldn't believe who it is!

"Hi, do you know where I can find We Were Liars?" A familiar voice asks me

It's Aaron, i'm quite surprised! What is he doing here, he doesn't even know it's me. I turn to face him and he looks shocked.

"It's in the fiction aisle, look under E" I say to him

"Uhh thanks! You work here?" Aaron asks me sounding a bit confused

"Yeah, I got to get back to work; so bye" I say rudely to him

"Since when? I go here all the time, I've never seen you here!" 

"Today is my first day, now let me get back to work!" I say with a scowl on my face 

Aaron raises his hands up like he surrenders, he then smirks at me and leaves. I roll my eyes and continue putting books away. He said he comes here all the time, does that mean he likes to read? So Aaron is smart, I never saw that coming. 15 minutes later, Aaron comes back to me.

"Uhh I can't find it!"

"You spent 15 mintues looking for a book?" I ask him

"Yeah well I really want to buy that book." he tells me

"Fine, follow me" I sigh

I go to the aisle and look to see if the book is the book is there, and it isn't! I sigh again and I tell him to wait. I go to the back room where we keep the extra books and see if there is a copy of We Were Liars. I see that there is and grab him the book. I see him sitting on the couch and hand him the book.

"Thanks!" He says to me with a smile on his face

"You're welcome." I smile back

We stand there awkwardly, not knowing what to say and Maria the manager comes to me

"Hey, you did an amazing job today, I'm letting you leave early! Have a great evening!" She says to me

I thank her and I go to the empolyees room to grab my things. I go out of the employees room and see Aaron still sitting on the couch. What is he doing!? 

"What are you still doing here?" I ask him

"I can't leave the store with a unpaid book you know. That's called stealing!" He tells me 

I grab the book and go to the cash register to scan it. As I scanning it, I notice Aaron staring at me. He was staring at me the way he stared at me at the park. I look up to him and our eyes meet, we both look down and I clear my throat.

"Uhmmm that will be $10.25"

He gives me the money and put the book in a bag and hand it to him. We both walk out the store and we start to have a conversation as we walk. He's actually not that bad, we mostly talked about books though. Maybe I was wrong about Aaron! Maybe he's not a jerk after all!
